Brief, clear definitions, with magisterial references where<br \/>\nappropriate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"a\">A<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Advent.<\/strong> A four-week liturgical season that<br \/>\nprepares for Christmas. It begins with First Vespers of the fourth Sunday before<br \/>\nDecember 25 and ends on Christmas Eve. Liturgical color: violet.<br \/>\nProper Marian antiphon: <em>Alma Redemptoris Mater<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marian title (advocation).<\/strong> The title under which the<br \/>\nfaithful invoke the Virgin Mary, generally tied to an event<br \/>\n(apparition, miracle, discovery of an image) or a spiritual attribute. It adds<br \/>\nnothing to dogma: Mary is the same; what changes is the place and the historical<br \/>\ncircumstance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alleluia.<\/strong> From the Hebrew <em>halelu-Yah<\/em> (\u00abpraise<br \/>\nYahweh\u00bb). The Paschal acclamation par excellence. Suppressed during Lent;<br \/>\nit returns solemnly at the Easter Vigil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annunciation.<\/strong> First Joyful Mystery of the Rosary.<br \/>\nThe announcement of the angel Gabriel to Mary (Lk 1:26-38). Liturgical solemnity on<br \/>\nMarch 25, nine months before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antiphon.<\/strong> A short verse or phrase sung before and<br \/>\nafter a psalm or canticle. The four major Marian antiphons<br \/>\nclose Compline in the Liturgy of the Hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marian apparitions.<\/strong> Particular manifestations<br \/>\nof the Blessed Virgin to specific persons. They belong to<br \/>\n<strong>private revelation<\/strong> (CCC 67); they do not bind the faith.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ark of the Covenant.<\/strong> The Old Testament chest that<br \/>\ncontained the tablets of the Law, the manna, and the staff of Aaron. Mary is<br \/>\ncalled the \u00abArk of the New Covenant\u00bb because she carried in her womb the<br \/>\nincarnate Word. A title in the Litany of Loreto.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assumption.<\/strong> Dogma defined by Pius XII in<br \/>\n<em>Munificentissimus Deus<\/em> (November 1, 1950): \u00abThe Immaculate Mother<br \/>\nof God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life,<br \/>\nwas assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.\u00bb Solemnity on August<br \/>\n15.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aurora (Dawn).<\/strong> Tradition of the <strong>Rosary of the<br \/>\nDawn<\/strong>: a sung procession at daybreak in Castilian and<br \/>\nAndalusian villages during the month of May and the month of October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hail Mary.<\/strong> The fundamental Marian prayer. The first part is<br \/>\nbiblical (Lk 1:28 + Lk 1:42); the second part is ecclesial, added from the<br \/>\n14th century and fixed in the Catechism of St. Pius V (1568).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ave Maris Stella.<\/strong> A hymn of Marian Vespers,<br \/>\nattributed to the monk Paul the Deacon (8th c.). \u00abHail, Star of the<br \/>\nSea.\u00bb<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"b\">B<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Beatitudes.<\/strong> The eight beatitudes (Mt 5:3-12).<br \/>\nMary&#8217;s spiritual motherhood is announced in Lk 11:28: <em>\u00abBlessed<br \/>\nare those who hear the word of God and keep it.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beatitudo.<\/strong> In theology, eternal happiness; the beatific<br \/>\nvision of God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blessed.<\/strong> <em>Eulogem\u00e9ne<\/em> in Greek. Elizabeth&#8217;s<br \/>\ngreeting to Mary: \u00abBlessed are you among women\u00bb (Lk 1:42).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"c\">C<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cana.<\/strong> The wedding in Galilee where Jesus works his first<br \/>\nsign at Mary&#8217;s request (Jn 2:1-12). Second Luminous Mystery. The last<br \/>\nrecorded words of Mary in the Gospel: <em>\u00abDo whatever he tells<br \/>\nyou.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Canticle.<\/strong> A biblical poetic composition meant to be<br \/>\nsung. The three Gospel canticles (of Zechariah, of Mary, of<br \/>\nSimeon) are prayed daily in the Liturgy of the Hours:<br \/>\n<em>Benedictus<\/em>, <em>Magnificat<\/em>, <em>Nunc dimittis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC).<\/strong> The doctrinal<br \/>\ncompendium promulgated by St. John Paul II in 1992. Part IV is devoted to<br \/>\nChristian prayer. Mariology in nn. 484-511 and 963-975.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Co-Redemptrix.<\/strong> A non-dogmatic title applied to Mary<br \/>\non account of her singular association with Christ&#8217;s redeeming work. The Church uses it<br \/>\nwith caution; any mediation of Mary is subordinate to and<br \/>\ndependent on the unique mediation of Christ (1 Tim 2:5).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compassio Mariae.<\/strong> \u00abThe compassion of Mary,\u00bb her<br \/>\nassociation with the Passion of Christ. The prophecy of Simeon: <em>\u00abA sword<br \/>\nwill pierce your soul\u00bb<\/em> (Lk 2:35).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virginal conception.<\/strong> The mystery by which Mary<br \/>\nconceived Jesus by the work of the Holy Spirit, without the involvement of a man (Mt<br \/>\n1:18-25; Lk 1:26-38). Distinct from the Immaculate Conception.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marian consecration.<\/strong> The act of giving oneself totally<br \/>\nto Mary as an instrument of the will of God. The classic formula: that of<br \/>\nSt. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort (<em>True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin<br \/>\nMary<\/em>, 1712).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contemplation.<\/strong> The third form of prayer according to the CCC<br \/>\n(nn. 2709-2719). \u00abA simple and loving gaze upon God.\u00bb St. Teresa:<br \/>\n<em>\u00abMental prayer is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosary beads.<\/strong> A string of beads for counting the<br \/>\nprayers: 59 beads in total (a crucifix + medal + five decades<br \/>\nseparated by a large bead).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lent.<\/strong> A liturgical season of forty days that<br \/>\nprepares for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. Liturgical color:<br \/>\nviolet. Proper Marian antiphon: <em>Ave Regina Caelorum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"d\">D<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Decade.<\/strong> A set of ten Hail Marys with an<br \/>\nOur Father and a Glory Be within the Rosary. The traditional Rosary<br \/>\nhas five decades; the \u00abfull Rosary\u00bb has twenty (the four<br \/>\ncrowns).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dogma.<\/strong> A truth of faith solemnly defined by the<br \/>\nChurch as revealed by God. The four Marian dogmas:<br \/>\n<strong>Divine Motherhood<\/strong> (Ephesus, 431), <strong>Perpetual<br \/>\nVirginity<\/strong>, <strong>Immaculate Conception<\/strong> (Pius IX,<br \/>\n1854), <strong>Assumption<\/strong> (Pius XII, 1950).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Lady of Sorrows (Dolorosa).<\/strong> Marian iconography centered on the Seven<br \/>\nSorrows. Obligatory memorial on September 15. <em>Stabat<br \/>\nMater<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday.<\/strong> The Lord&#8217;s Day. The first day of the week. The day<br \/>\nof the Resurrection. It is the supreme weekly feast; no Marian<br \/>\ncelebration displaces it unless it is a solemnity.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"e\">E<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Incarnation.<\/strong> The mystery by which the eternal Word<br \/>\nbecame man in the womb of Mary (Jn 1:14). The summit of the Marian<br \/>\n<em>fiat<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encyclical.<\/strong> A solemn letter of the Pope addressed to the whole<br \/>\nChurch. The most important Marian encyclicals: <em>Octobri Mense<\/em><br \/>\n(Leo XIII, 1891), <em>Munificentissimus Deus<\/em> (Pius XII, 1950),<br \/>\n<em>Redemptoris Mater<\/em> (John Paul II, 1987).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Holy Spirit.<\/strong> The third Person of the Most Holy<br \/>\nTrinity. <em>\u00abThe Holy Spirit will come upon you\u00bb<\/em> (Lk 1:35) \u2014<br \/>\nthe Annunciation. <em>\u00abFilled with the Holy Spirit\u00bb<\/em> (Acts 2:4) \u2014<br \/>\nPentecost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Betrothal.<\/strong> A promise of marriage. Mary was<br \/>\n\u00abbetrothed\u00bb to Joseph before they lived together (Mt 1:18).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"f\">F<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fatima.<\/strong> Apparitions to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta at<br \/>\nCova da Iria (Portugal), May 13 &#8211; October 13, 1917. Approval of the bishop of<br \/>\nLeiria, October 13, 1930. Optional memorial on May 13.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feast.<\/strong> The second grade of liturgical<br \/>\ncelebrations, after the solemnity. It has the Gloria but not the Creed (except<br \/>\nfeasts of the Lord).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fiat.<\/strong> \u00abLet it be done.\u00bb <em>\u00abLet it be done to me according to your<br \/>\nword\u00bb<\/em> (Lk 1:38) \u2014 Mary&#8217;s response to Gabriel. A model of<br \/>\nobedience and of faith.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Filial.<\/strong> Proper to a child. Filial devotion to Mary: that<br \/>\nproper to one who recognizes her as spiritual Mother.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"g\">G<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Glory Be.<\/strong> The Trinitarian doxology that closes<br \/>\neach decade of the Rosary and each psalm of the Office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goigs.<\/strong> A medieval Marian strophic form proper to<br \/>\nCatalonia, Valencia, Aragon, and the Balearic Islands. Each parish or shrine has<br \/>\nits own, dedicated to the local title.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joyful Mysteries.<\/strong> The first set of mysteries of the Rosary:<br \/>\nAnnunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Finding of the Child in the<br \/>\nTemple. Days: Monday and Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gregorian chant.<\/strong> The official liturgical chant of the Latin<br \/>\nChurch: monodic, modal, unaccompanied. Codified by St. Gregory<br \/>\nthe Great (6th-7th c.).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"h\">H<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hierophany.<\/strong> A manifestation of the sacred. Marian<br \/>\napparitions are Christian hierophanies: signs of the maternal<br \/>\nnearness of God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hyperdulia.<\/strong> The special veneration due to Mary,<br \/>\nsuperior to dulia (which is due to the saints) and inferior to latria<br \/>\n(the adoration due to God alone). CCC 971.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"i\">I<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Iconography.<\/strong> The set of images and symbols that<br \/>\nrepresent a sacred figure. Marian iconography includes<br \/>\nTheotokos, Immaculata, Annunciation, Piet\u00e0, Assumption, Coronation,<br \/>\nOur Lady of Sorrows, Maest\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Immaculate Conception.<\/strong> Dogma defined by Pius IX in<br \/>\n<em>Ineffabilis Deus<\/em> (December 8, 1854): Mary was preserved from<br \/>\nall stain of original sin from the first instant of her<br \/>\nconception. Principal patroness of Spain. Solemnity on December<br \/>\n8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Immaculate Heart of Mary.<\/strong> Obligatory memorial on the<br \/>\nSaturday following the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pius XII consecrated the world<br \/>\nto the Immaculate Heart on October 31, 1942.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"j\">J<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Aspiration (ejaculatory prayer).<\/strong> A very brief and fervent prayer<br \/>\nrepeated throughout the day. <em>\u00abMy Mother, in you I<br \/>\ntrust.\u00bb<\/em> The <strong>Fatima Prayer<\/strong> is prayed at the end<br \/>\nof each decade: <em>\u00abO my Jesus, forgive us our<br \/>\nsins\u2026\u00bb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"l\">L<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Latria.<\/strong> The worship of adoration due to God alone<br \/>\n(Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Distinct from <em>dulia<\/em> (saints) and<br \/>\n<em>hyperdulia<\/em> (Mary).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Litany of Loreto.<\/strong> The Litany of the Blessed Virgin<br \/>\nMary, so called from the Italian shrine of Loreto where it was<br \/>\nspread. Approved by Sixtus V (bull <em>Reddituri<\/em>, July 11,<br \/>\n1587). Most recent expansion: three invocations by Francis in 2020 (Mother<br \/>\nof mercy, Mother of hope, Solace of<br \/>\nmigrants).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lectio divina.<\/strong> \u00abDivine reading.\u00bb A monastic method of<br \/>\nprayer with four steps: <em>lectio<\/em> (reading), <em>meditatio<\/em><br \/>\n(meditation), <em>oratio<\/em> (prayer), <em>contemplatio<\/em><br \/>\n(contemplation). Mary is the model: <em>\u00abMary kept all these<br \/>\nthings, pondering them in her heart\u00bb<\/em> (Lk 2:19).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Litany.<\/strong> From the Greek <em>litane\u00eda<\/em> (\u00absupplication\u00bb).<br \/>\nA responsorial prayer: the celebrant says an invocation, the assembly<br \/>\nresponds. Traditionally, in the universal Church: of the Most Holy<br \/>\nName of Jesus, of the Sacred Heart, of the Most Precious Blood,<br \/>\n<strong>of Loreto<\/strong>, and of St. Joseph.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liturgy.<\/strong> The public and official worship of the Church. Marian<br \/>\npiety, according to <em>Marialis Cultus<\/em> 31, must be inspired by the<br \/>\nliturgy and lead to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liturgy of the Hours.<\/strong> The official public prayer of the<br \/>\nChurch distributed throughout the day: Office of Readings, Lauds, Daytime<br \/>\nPrayer, Vespers, Compline. Each Vespers includes the<br \/>\n<em>Magnificat<\/em>. Each Compline ends with a Marian<br \/>\nantiphon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loreto.<\/strong> The Italian shrine of the Holy House of<br \/>\nNazareth, according to tradition translated in the 13th century. It gives its name to the<br \/>\nLitany of Loreto. Optional memorial on December 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lourdes.<\/strong> Apparitions to St. Bernadette Soubirous,<br \/>\nFebruary 11 &#8211; July 16, 1858. Approval of the bishop of Tarbes, January 18, 1862.<br \/>\nOptional memorial on February 11. World Day of the Sick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luminous Mysteries.<\/strong> The fourth set of mysteries of the Rosary,<br \/>\nproposed by St. John Paul II in <em>Rosarium Virginis Mariae<\/em><br \/>\n(October 16, 2002): Baptism, Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, Transfiguration,<br \/>\nEucharist. Day: Thursday.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"m\">M<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mother of God.<\/strong> In Greek <em>Theot\u00f3kos<\/em>. A dogmatic<br \/>\ntitle defined by the Council of Ephesus (431) against Nestorius.<br \/>\nSolemnity on January 1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mother of the Church.<\/strong> A title proclaimed by St. Paul<br \/>\nVI at the close of the third session of Vatican II (November 21, 1964).<br \/>\nObligatory memorial instituted by Francis on February 11, 2018, the<br \/>\nMonday after Pentecost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magnificat.<\/strong> The canticle of Mary at the Visitation (Lk<br \/>\n1:46-55). It is prayed every evening at Vespers in the Liturgy of the Hours.<br \/>\n<em>\u00abMy soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mariology.<\/strong> The theological treatise on the Virgin Mary.<br \/>\nIt is set within Christology and ecclesiology. All Mariology<br \/>\nis Christology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marianist.<\/strong> Belonging or referring to the Society<br \/>\nof Mary, a congregation founded by William Joseph Chaminade in 1817.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marians.<\/strong> The Congregation of the Immaculate Conception<br \/>\nof the Blessed Virgin Mary (MIC), founded by Father Stanislaus<br \/>\nPapczy\u0144ski in 1670 in Poland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marialis Cultus.<\/strong> The apostolic exhortation of St. Paul<br \/>\nVI (February 2, 1974) on Marian devotion. The reference document for<br \/>\nall authentic Marian piety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mediation.<\/strong> Mediatrix. A traditional title of Mary.<br \/>\nAlways subordinate to the unique mediation of Christ (1 Tim 2:5).<br \/>\n<em>Lumen Gentium<\/em> 60-62.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medjugorje.<\/strong> A locality in Bosnia and Herzegovina where<br \/>\nsix people claim to receive daily apparitions of the Virgin since<br \/>\n1981. The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (September 19, 2024)<br \/>\ngranted the <em>nulla osta<\/em> regarding the spiritual experience of the<br \/>\nshrine, without pronouncing on the supernatural character of the<br \/>\napparitions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Memorial.<\/strong> The third grade of liturgical<br \/>\ncelebrations. <strong>Obligatory memorial<\/strong>: it must be celebrated.<br \/>\n<strong>Optional memorial<\/strong>: it is left to the priest&#8217;s discretion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meditation.<\/strong> The second form of prayer according to the CCC<br \/>\n(nn. 2705-2708). A search with the mind to understand the will of<br \/>\nGod and to respond to him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mystery.<\/strong> A truth of faith that surpasses reason but does not<br \/>\ncontradict it. The <strong>mysteries of the Rosary<\/strong> are episodes<br \/>\nof the life of Christ (and of Mary) that are contemplated while praying the<br \/>\ndecades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monody.<\/strong> Chant in a single voice. Gregorian chant<br \/>\nis monodic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Munificentissimus Deus.<\/strong> The apostolic constitution of<br \/>\nPius XII (November 1, 1950) that defined the dogma of the Assumption.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"n\">N<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Nican Mopohua.<\/strong> An account in Nahuatl (c. 1556) attributed<br \/>\nto Antonio Valeriano on the apparitions of Guadalupe (Tepeyac, Mexico,<br \/>\n1531).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Novena.<\/strong> A devotion of nine consecutive days of<br \/>\nprayer. The most widespread novena in Spain: to the Immaculate Conception (November<br \/>\n29 &#8211; December 7).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nulla obstat.<\/strong> \u00abNothing stands in the way.\u00bb An<br \/>\necclesiastical declaration that a text or a devotion contains no doctrinal errors.<br \/>\nThe new DDF Norms of 2024 introduce the <em>Nihil obstat<\/em> as<br \/>\nthe customary conclusion for supernatural phenomena with spiritual<br \/>\nfruits.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"o\">O<\/h2>\n<p><strong>October.<\/strong> The Month of the Rosary. Consecrated by Leo XIII<br \/>\nin <em>Supremi apostolatus officio<\/em> (September 1, 1883). On October<br \/>\n7 the obligatory memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Divine Office.<\/strong> A synonym for the Liturgy of the<br \/>\nHours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To pray (orar).<\/strong> To raise the soul to God (St. John Damascene,<br \/>\nCCC 2559). Broader than \u00abto recite\u00bb: it includes vocal prayer, meditation, and<br \/>\ncontemplation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"p\">P<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Our Father.<\/strong> The prayer that Christ taught the<br \/>\ndisciples (Mt 6:9-13; Lk 11:2-4). It is prayed at the beginning of each decade of the<br \/>\nRosary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passover\/Easter.<\/strong> Passage. The Jewish Passover commemorates the<br \/>\nliberation from Egypt. The Christian Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, is<br \/>\nthe greatest feast of the liturgical year. Subordinate to the liturgy (<em>Marialis Cultus<\/em> 31). The<br \/>\n<em>Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy<\/em> (CDWDS, 2002)<br \/>\nregulates it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polyphony.<\/strong> Music in several voices. The Spanish polyphonic<br \/>\ngolden age: Morales, Guerrero, Victoria (16th c.).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prophecy.<\/strong> A message inspired by God.
