Philological arguments (the Semitic use<br \/>\nof <em>adelph\u00f3s<\/em>) that the Church has always maintained.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"san-agust\u00edn-354-430\">Saint Augustine (354-430)<\/h3>\n<p>The most quoted of the Fathers in Western mariology. <em>Sermo<\/em><br \/>\n215, 4:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cPrius concepit mente quam ventre.\u201d<\/em> <em>\u201cMary conceived first<br \/>\nin her mind than in her womb.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>De sancta virginitate<\/em> 3: spiritual motherhood prevails over<br \/>\nbodily motherhood. <em>De sancta virginitate<\/em> 6: Mary is the<br \/>\n<strong>Mother of the members of the Savior<\/strong>, because by her<br \/>\ncharity she cooperated so that the faithful might be born in the<br \/>\nChurch.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"san-cirilo-de-alejandr\u00eda-c.-376-444\">Saint Cyril of Alexandria<br \/>\n(c. 376-444)<\/h3>\n<p>The protagonist of the <strong>Council of Ephesus (431)<\/strong><br \/>\nwhich proclaimed Mary <em>Theot\u00f3kos<\/em> against Nestorius. Built by Sixtus III after Ephesus (431). It<br \/>\npreserves the <em>Salus Populi Romani<\/em> icon, venerated since the 6th<br \/>\ncentury. Pope Francis would visit it before and after each international<br \/>\njourney. Optional memorial on August 5.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loreto \u2014 Italy.<\/strong> The Holy House, according to<br \/>\ntradition the Nazareth dwelling of the Holy Family, transferred to Loreto<br \/>\nin the 13th century. It gives its name to the Litany of Loreto. Patroness<br \/>\nof aviators. Optional memorial on December 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lourdes \u2014 France.<\/strong> Apparitions to Saint Bernadette in<br \/>\n1858. More than 70 miraculous cures recognized by the Lourdes Medical<br \/>\nBureau. It receives 6 million pilgrims a year. World Day of the Sick on<br \/>\nFebruary 11.<\/p>\n<p><strong>F\u00e1tima \u2014 Portugal.<\/strong> Apparitions of 1917. Cova da<br \/>\nIria. Shrine of the Queen of the Rosary and of the Immaculate Heart.<br \/>\nAttack on Saint John Paul II on May 13, 1981, attributed by him to the<br \/>\nVirgin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Czestochowa \u2014 Poland.<\/strong> The icon of the Black Mother of<br \/>\nGod, according to tradition painted by Saint Luke, kept in the Pauline<br \/>\nmonastery of Jasna G\u00f3ra. Queen of Poland. The spiritual center of Polish<br \/>\nCatholicism; the favorite shrine of Saint John Paul II.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Knock \u2014 Ireland.<\/strong> Apparition of 1879 before fifteen<br \/>\nwitnesses. Eminently liturgical and eucharistic. John Paul II made a<br \/>\npilgrimage there in 1979, Francis in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walsingham \u2014 England.<\/strong> \u201cEngland, Mary&#8217;s Dowry.\u201d<br \/>\nApparition of 1061 to Lady Richeldis de Faverches. Destroyed under Henry<br \/>\nVIII, restored in the 20th century. The only Marian shrine with both<br \/>\nCatholic and Anglican worship re-established.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mariazell \u2014 Austria.<\/strong> Patroness of Austria. Magna<br \/>\nMater Austriae. A 12th-century image venerated since the founding of the<br \/>\nmonastery (1157).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aylesford \u2014 England.<\/strong> A Carmelite center. An<br \/>\nimportant center of pilgrimage for families.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"am\u00e9rica\">America<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Guadalupe \u2014 Mexico.<\/strong> Apparitions of 1531 to Saint Juan<br \/>\nDiego. Patroness of America (John Paul II, 1999). An image that wept 101 times, verified by the University of<br \/>\nAkita.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"\u00e1frica\">Africa<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Our Lady of Africa \u2014 Algeria.<\/strong> The Basilica of<br \/>\nAlgiers, once a center for the spread of Christianity in the Maghreb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kibeho \u2014 Rwanda.<\/strong> Apparitions approved in 2001 (the<br \/>\nonly continental African approval, concerning apparitions of 1981-1989<br \/>\nthat foretold the Rwandan genocide).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"c.-testimonios-y-conversiones-marianas-c\u00e9lebres\">C. Famous Marian<br \/>\ntestimonies and conversions<\/h2>\n<p>Mary has been an instrument of spectacular conversions throughout<br \/>\nhistory. A documented selection.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"alphonse-ratisbonne-1814-1884\">Alphonse Ratisbonne<br \/>\n(1814-1884)<\/h3>\n<p>An Alsatian Jew, freethinker, son of a banker. On <strong>January 20,<br \/>\n1842<\/strong>, during a tourist visit to the Roman basilica of Sant&#8217;Andrea<br \/>\ndelle Fratte (Rome), he had a vision of the Immaculate Virgin identical to<br \/>\nthat of the Miraculous Medal he was carrying in his pocket on a bet. He<br \/>\nconverted on the spot, was baptized a few months later, and founded with<br \/>\nhis brother Th\u00e9odore the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion. He died a monk<br \/>\nin Jerusalem. His conversion is documented by a Roman canonical<br \/>\nprocess.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hermann-cohen-1820-1871\">Hermann Cohen (1820-1871)<\/h3>\n<p>A Jewish virtuoso pianist, Liszt&#8217;s favorite pupil. Converted on May 8,<br \/>\n1847, while attending, almost by chance, a eucharistic benediction in<br \/>\nParis. Marian devotion was decisive: he joined the Discalced Carmelites,<br \/>\nbecame \u201cFr. Augustine Mary of the Blessed Sacrament,\u201d and restored male<br \/>\nCarmelite life in France. He died a victim of the Franco-Prussian War<br \/>\nwhile caring for sick prisoners.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"john-henry-newman-1801-1890\">John Henry Newman (1801-1890)<\/h3>\n<p>Cardinal and Doctor of the Church (canonized by Francis in 2019). A<br \/>\nhigh-level Anglican, he converted to Catholicism on October 9, 1845. In<br \/>\n<em>Apologia pro vita sua<\/em> (1864) and <em>Letter to Pusey on<br \/>\nMariolatry<\/em> (1866) he defended Catholic mariology against Anglican<br \/>\nmisunderstanding. His motto was <em>Cor ad cor loquitur<\/em> (\u201cHeart<br \/>\nspeaks to heart\u201d).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"paul-claudel-1868-1955\">Paul Claudel (1868-1955)<\/h3>\n<p>French poet and diplomat. A sudden conversion on <strong>December 25,<br \/>\n1886<\/strong>, while listening to the <em>Magnificat<\/em> at Christmas<br \/>\nVespers in Notre-Dame de Paris: <em>\u201cIn an instant my heart was touched<br \/>\nand I believed. I believed with such an adherence, with such a lifting up<br \/>\nof my whole being, with such conviction, with such certainty that left no<br \/>\nroom for any kind of doubt\u2026\u201d<\/em>. He spent his whole life under Mary&#8217;s<br \/>\ngaze. His poem <em>Le Magnificat<\/em> is a summit of 20th-century Marian<br \/>\npoetry.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"g.-k.-chesterton-1874-1936\">G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936)<\/h3>\n<p>An English journalist, novelist and apologist. Converted to<br \/>\nCatholicism in 1922 after years of searching. Marian devotion was a<br \/>\ncornerstone: he visited Lourdes and devoted memorable pages to the Virgin<br \/>\nin <em>The Everlasting Man<\/em> (1925). <em>The Skull<\/em> (poem):<br \/>\n<em>\u201cBut the string that pulled was a rose, and at its end the Mother held<br \/>\nit fast.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"edith-stein-santa-teresa-benedicta-de-la-cruz-1891-1942\">Edith<br \/>\nStein \u2014 Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891-1942)<\/h3>\n<p>A phenomenologist philosopher, pupil of Husserl, Jewish. Converted in<br \/>\n1922 after reading the <em>Life<\/em> of Saint Teresa of Jesus. A<br \/>\nDiscalced Carmelite from 1933. Martyred in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942.<br \/>\nHer writings on Mary and on women (<em>Woman<\/em>, <em>Essays on<br \/>\nWoman<\/em>) are an essential reference. Co-patroness of Europe (John Paul<br \/>\nII, 1999).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"andr\u00e9-frossard-1915-1995\">Andr\u00e9 Frossard (1915-1995)<\/h3>\n<p>A French journalist, son of a senior Communist leader, a militant<br \/>\natheist. Converted on <strong>July 8, 1935<\/strong>, after entering by<br \/>\nchance a chapel of the Sisters of Reparative Adoration in Paris while<br \/>\nwaiting for a friend. He came out a Christian, without transition or<br \/>\nargument. He told the story in <em>Dieu existe, je l&#8217;ai rencontr\u00e9<\/em><br \/>\n(1969), a worldwide bestseller. The eucharistic presence and the Virgin<br \/>\nwere the two pillars of his new faith.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sundar-singh-1889-1929\">Sundar Singh (1889-1929)<\/h3>\n<p>An Indian Sikh, a persecutor of Christians in his youth. A vision of<br \/>\nChrist on December 18, 1904. Converted to Christianity, he led a life of<br \/>\nabsolute poverty and prayer (a Christian sadhu). Although Protestant by<br \/>\nconfession, his mariology was deeply Catholic: veneration of the Virgin as<br \/>\nMother of the Lord.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bernard-nathanson-1926-2011\">Bernard Nathanson (1926-2011)<\/h3>\n<p>An American Jewish gynecologist, co-founder of NARAL (the National<br \/>\nAssociation for the Repeal of Abortion Laws). Director of the largest<br \/>\nabortion clinic in New York. Converted to Catholicism in 1996. Marian<br \/>\ndevotion (especially the Miraculous Medal) was decisive in his process.<br \/>\nAuthor of <em>The Hand of God<\/em> (1996).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cristina-y-carlos-wahn\u00f3n\">Cristina and Carlos Wahn\u00f3n<\/h3>\n<p>A Spanish couple of the 1980s, militant Gnostics, who preached against<br \/>\nthe Church on Spanish television. Conversion in Lourdes (1985).
