Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"Our Lady of Suyapa: the little one who fit in the palm of your hand"

On the outskirts of Tegucigalpa, in the Suyapa neighborhood, the patron saint of Honduras is venerated: a tiny Marian image, barely six centimeters tall, affectionately known as "La Morenita" or "the little one of Suyapa." Despite its size, devotion to it is immense throughout the country and among Hondurans around the world.
Pious tradition places the discovery around 1747. It tells of a farmer, known locally as Alejandro Colindres, who was returning from the fields and, caught by nightfall, lay down to sleep in an open field. As he lay down, he felt something beneath his body; he moved it away and felt it again. In the daylight, he discovered it was a tiny image of the Virgin Mary, which he took home with him.
That small image was venerated first in a humble home and later in a hermitage, until its fame for graces and favors spread throughout Honduras. It is important to distinguish, as always, between the account of the discovery (a tradition passed down through popular memory) and the solidly documented ecclesiastical events.
What is documented is the growth of the cult and its recognition: Suyapa was declared patron saint of Honduras by the Holy See, and a large basilica was built to accommodate pilgrims next to the old hermitage. Her feast day is celebrated on February 3. Specific miracles are known primarily through votive offerings and accounts of gratitude, not through a systematic critical record.
