"You, in the hawthorn bush?": the astonishment of the shepherd from Aránzazu

In the rugged, wild mountains of Oñati, covered in thorns, tradition places one of the most endearing scenes in Gipuzkoa. A shepherd named Rodrigo de Balzategi was tending his flock when, on a thorny bush, he discovered a small image of the Virgin and Child, and beside it a cowbell. Overwhelmed by the unexpectedness of the place—no one puts a sacred image among brambles—he is said to have exclaimed in Basque: "Arantzan zu?", that is, "You, on the thorn bush?". From that question, filled with wonder, the name of the place is said to have been born: Arantzazu.

The shepherd interpreted the discovery as a providential sign. Some devotional accounts add that, after taking the image down and organizing a procession, it began to rain after a long drought; but this should be read as a pious tale passed down through tradition, not as a verified fact. The etymology itself—from arantza, "thorn," and the intensive zu—refers to that "place of thorns" and to the shepherd's phrase, in a beautiful coincidence between language and legend.

«Arantzan zu?»: «¿Tú, en el espino?», habría exclamado el pastor ante la imagen.

As editor, I must carefully separate the threads. The existence of the sanctuary, the devotion, and the historical establishment of the cult around the 15th century are documented; tradition places the apparition in 1468 or 1469, depending on the version. However, the miraculous discovery among the thorns, the cowbell, and the shepherd's exact words are pious tradition, not a proven fact. And regarding the Rosary, it must be said: the sources consulted do not establish a specific link between Aránzazu and the Rosary as a confraternity or devotion; what is clear is the deep Marian devotion and the enormous popular reach of the sanctuary.

Today Our Lady of Aránzazu is the patron saint of Gipuzkoa, and her sanctuary, perched on the mountain, continues to summon those who, like that shepherd, are amazed to find the Mother right where they least expected it: among the thorns of life.
