Our Lady of Akita

Our Lady of Akita

Asia · Japan

What happened

In Akita, northern Japan, Sister Agnes Sasagawa claimed to have received messages associated with an image of the Virgin Mary at the Convent of the Servants of the Eucharist between 1973 and 1981. The most well-known devotional account involves the wooden statue that is said to have wept 101 times. This detail is widely circulated in Akita tradition and in the Catholic press and websites, although it is not always presented with the same level of documentation.

The message of the Virgin

The content attributed to Akita emphasizes prayer, penance, and conversion, and warns of spiritual punishments if humanity does not change its ways. In Catholic tradition, Akita is often interpreted as a call to Eucharistic fidelity and prayer for the Church.

The sanctuary today

Today there is a sanctuary and convent linked to the apparitions, with stable veneration and pilgrimage of the faithful.

The Church's recognition

Favorable diocesan judgment: the local bishop recognized the authenticity of the events in 1984, authorizing the veneration. Regarding Rome's position, prudence was positive, but there is no record of a universal definition equivalent to a solemn approval from the Holy See. Therefore, it is appropriate to present it as a devotion approved by the local ordinary rather than as an "approval from the Vatican."

A grace that touches the heart

The image of Our Lady of Akita is famous for the phenomenon of tears, which tradition recounts as having occurred 101 times; this number is frequently repeated in devotion to Our Lady of Akita and in popular Catholic sources. The case is remembered for having attracted the attention of those who attempted to examine the phenomenon of the statue's weeping.

Link with the Rosary

Akita's message emphasizes prayer and penance, in line with Marian spirituality, which finds its simplest and most constant expression in the Rosary. The Eucharistic and penitential focus of the message invites the faithful to persevering prayer for the Church.
