What happened

At the Daughters of Charity convent on Rue du Bac in Paris, the young novice Catherine Labouré claimed to have had several apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1830. The most well-known is that of November 27, 1830, in which she saw Mary standing on a globe, crushing the head of a serpent, with outstretched hands and rays of light emanating from her fingers; around her appeared the prayer, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." The Virgin asked her to have a medal struck according to this design, promising special graces to those who wore it with confidence. The spiritual director presented the case to the Archbishop of Paris, and the first medals were struck in 1832.

The message of the Virgin

The inscription on the medal proclaims the Immaculate Conception of Mary, already widely believed and defined as dogma in 1854. The message is a promise of grace and intercession for those who wear the medal with faith. This is coupled with the lesson of humility and secrecy exemplified by Catherine herself, who lived her entire life in anonymity and revealed her identity as a visionary only shortly before her death, a fact well-documented in her canonization process.

The sanctuary today

The Chapel of the Miraculous Medal, on the rue du Bac, is today a Marian shrine in the heart of Paris, where the incorrupt body of Saint Catherine Labouré is venerated. It is a simple and secluded place of constant pilgrimage, and a world center for the dissemination of devotion to the Miraculous Medal.

The Church's recognition

The apparition was received favorably and the devotion approved; the visionary was canonized and the medal recognized as sacramental. Theological tradition counts it among the classic apparitions, with practical recognition of its origin, even though there is no solemn formula from the Holy See declaring its supernatural nature. Out of prudence, it is labelled as an approved cult. Under the 2024 Norms of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the ordinary favorable judgment would today be a nihil obstat, without an explicit declaration of supernaturality.

A grace that touches the heart

In the years immediately following its distribution, the medal was associated with numerous conversions and healings, to the point that people began to call it "miraculous" because of the reputation for graces obtained. Among the famous cases recorded in the documents of the Congregation of the Mission are the conversions of people who had strayed from the faith after receiving the medal; the specific details of each account belong, in part, to devotional tradition.

Link with the Rosary

The Miraculous Medal bears the face of the Immaculate Conception, which the Rosary contemplates in its mysteries. Wearing the medal and praying the Rosary are two simple and popular ways to entrust oneself to the intercession of the Mother who crushes the serpent's head.
