What happened

It's important to state this clearly: this is NOT an apparition, but a tradition of the DISCOVERY of an image. According to pious tradition, an ancient image of the Virgin existed during the Visigothic period; to protect it from the Muslims, the Christians supposedly hid it within the city walls in the 8th century. After the Christian conquest of Madrid by Alfonso VI in 1085, the king and the people prayed to find it again, and a section of the wall is said to have collapsed, revealing the image intact. This account is a pious tradition, a foundational legend of the devotion, not documented in sources contemporary to the events. The very name "Almudena" is linked to the Arabic al-mudayna ("the citadel," the wall), which reinforces its medieval folk origin. What is historically and undeniably true is the deep-rooted nature of the devotion since the Middle Ages.

The message of the Virgin

There was no verbal message: it is a tradition of discovery, not an apparition with words. The devotional meaning is profound: the image, kept within the city walls for centuries of domination and rediscovered after the Reconquista, is a symbol of a faith that remained hidden in difficult times and returns to the light. The Mother who was "hidden in the citadel" becomes the protector of the recovered city.

The sanctuary today

The image is venerated in the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena, next to the Royal Palace of Madrid. Our Lady of Almudena is the principal patron saint of Madrid and its archdiocese. The feast day on November 9th brings together thousands of Madrid residents each year, with the traditional offering of flowers and mantillas and the procession of the image through the city.

The Church's recognition

The devotion is fully approved and deeply integrated into the diocesan liturgical life, and Our Lady of Almudena is the principal patron saint of Madrid and its archdiocese. Regarding the account of the discovery, the Church presents it in the language of tradition, without making historical pronouncements on every detail. There is no—nor could there be—a modern decree of supernaturality in the style of Lourdes, because it is not an apparition but a tradition of the discovery of an image.

A grace that touches the heart

Numerous votive offerings and expressions of gratitude attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Almudena—for healings, protection of families, and vocations—are preserved and recorded in diocesan chronicles and the local press; the specific details belong to local hagiography and are not systematically documented in academic publications. The devotion of generations of Madrid residents who, every November 9th, shower their patron saint with flowers is deeply moving.

Link with the Rosary

Before the patron saint of Madrid, the recitation of the Rosary is a daily devotion in the cathedral that bears her name. Entrusting the city and its families to Our Lady of Almudena by meditating on the mysteries is to prolong the prayer with which the people, according to tradition, begged to be reunited with their Mother.
