What happened

Between November 28, 1981, and November 28, 1989, several young women claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in Kibeho, in southern Rwanda. The most widely accepted tradition identifies Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka, and Marie-Claire Mukangango as the visionaries recognized in the diocesan process. The Bishop of Gikongoro, Augustin Misago, declared at least three of the apparitions authentic after a lengthy discernment process that lasted years. Kibeho thus became the only African Marian apparition officially recognized by the Catholic Church.

The message of the Virgin

The core of the message revolves around conversion, penance, prayer, and solidarity, with a strong sense of spiritual urgency. In Catholic discourse, it is often summarized with expressions such as "the time left is short." It is also associated with a call to mourn for sin and to avoid violence. The connection of this message to the 1994 genocide stems in part from a later spiritual interpretation and should not be presented as a simplistic "political prophecy."

The sanctuary today

The Kibeho shrine was publicly dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and is today a major national and international pilgrimage site.

The Church's recognition

The apparition was approved locally by the diocesan bishop, Augustin Misago, in 2001. It is the African Marian apparition with the clearest ecclesial recognition and is often cited as the only one approved in Africa. It is worth remembering that, in matters of apparitions, the diocesan bishop has primary authority, and in Kibeho, this local approval is decisive.

A grace that touches the heart

A frequently cited point in Catholic literature about Kibeho is that the investigating commission worked for years with theologians, doctors, scientists, and psychiatrists, and that its favorable conclusion was received as a landmark almost as astonishing as the visions themselves. Many devotees retrospectively interpret, in light of the 1994 genocide, the call to conversion and to avoid violence.

Link with the Rosary

In Kibeho, the Virgin Mary specifically requested the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows, linked to the devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows under which the sanctuary is venerated. Prayer, along with penance and conversion, is central to the message received by the visionaries.
