What happened

In Pontmain, a small village in Mayenne, in the diocese of Laval, on the afternoon of January 17, 1871, in the midst of the Franco-Prussian War, the children Eugène and Joseph Barbedette, followed by other girls, saw a beautiful Lady in the sky above a barn, wearing a blue dress strewn with stars, a cross on her chest, and a smiling face. The adults present did not see the vision, but watched the children pray; the message unfolded through letters that appeared in the sky, forming sentences that the children read aloud. The vision lasted for several hours while the villagers prayed the Rosary and sang.

The message of the Virgin

The central phrase, recorded in the diocesan processes, was: “But pray, my children, God will hear you soon. My Son is moved by compassion.” It is a call to trust in prayer in the midst of danger and a promise of hope that explicitly links prayer with peace.

The sanctuary today

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pontmain, with its neo-Gothic basilica, was built on the site of the apparition. It is a place of pilgrimage, especially for those seeking peace, vocations, and comfort in times of trial, and tradition venerates Our Lady of Hope there.

The Church's recognition

The Bishop of Laval, after the corresponding investigation, recognized the apparitions in 1872. This is an apparition approved by the local bishop, now a diocesan sanctuary, prior to the 2024 Norms of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

A grace that touches the heart

In the days immediately following the apparition, the Prussian army's advance halted in that area, and shortly thereafter an armistice was signed. The cessation of military operations is historically documented; its interpretation as a response to the Virgin's promise belongs to the faith of the people, who saw the word fulfilled: "God will hear you soon."

Link with the Rosary

During the hours of the apparition, the people of Pontmain prayed the Rosary at the site of the vision. This apparition reminds us that the Rosary is a prayer of trust in times of danger and that Mary hears and touches the Heart of her Son when her children invoke her together.
