Our Lady of Vailankanni

What happened
Vailankanni (Velankanni), on the coast of Tamil Nadu, is a very popular Marian shrine whose origins blend accounts of apparitions and miracles passed down through local tradition between the 16th and 17th centuries. The nickname "Lourdes of the East" reflects its devotional prestige, but the historical reconstruction of its founding events is largely based on tradition.
The message of the Virgin
There is no single, closed message like in Kibeho or Akita; what predominates is devotion to Mary as Mother of health, help, and compassion.
The sanctuary today
It is one of the largest Catholic pilgrimage centers in Asia, with a very busy basilica and a devotion that also attracts followers of other religions.
The Church's recognition
A highly venerated Marian shrine with a fully approved cult. There is no canonical recognition equivalent to that of an approved apparition with a defined message; its strength lies in centuries-old tradition and the cult firmly embraced by the Church.
A grace that touches the heart
Vailankanni's fame is linked to numerous accounts of healings and the massive influx of pilgrims, especially during the great annual festival. These accounts are verifiable as a phenomenon of worship, although not every specific miracle has been confirmed.
Link with the Rosary
As a major Marian shrine, Vailankanni is a place where the Rosary accompanies the prayers of countless pilgrims who come to Mary, Mother of Health. The trusting invocation of the Virgin for help and comfort is the heart of this popular devotion.
