What happened

Between 1968 and 1970, crowds claimed to have seen luminous figures of the Virgin Mary above the Coptic Church of Zeitoun in Cairo, sometimes accompanied by doves or radiant lights. This is a famous case because it was observed by both believers and non-believers and was quickly disseminated through the Egyptian press and church records.

The message of the Virgin

Unlike other apparitions, in Zeitún there is no record of a stable and uniform verbal message; the phenomenon was understood above all as a sign of comfort and of Mary's maternal presence.

The sanctuary today

The church of Zeitun remains a place of pilgrimage within the Egyptian Coptic memory.

The Church's recognition

Recognition by the Coptic Orthodox Church and widespread popular acceptance. There is no equivalent universal decree in Catholicism; the recognition comes from the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate, not from a formal act of the Holy See.

A grace that touches the heart

The most striking feature, and one verifiable as a historical devotional fact, is that the lights of Zeitún were seen by multitudes over a prolonged period, something exceptional in the history of modern apparitions. This collective and prolonged visibility was etched in the memory of believers and the curious alike.

Link with the Rosary

Although no verbal message was recorded in Zeitún, the crowds that gathered night after night prayed before the luminous apparitions, and the Rosary has been the natural prayer among the faithful to accompany the contemplation of Mary. The phenomenon was embraced as an invitation to trust in the maternal presence of the Virgin.
