Our Lady of the Thorn
Patron saint of El Burgo de Osma (Soria)
In the cathedral of El Burgo de Osma, Our Lady of the Thorn is venerated, patron saint and founding image of the town; tradition places her appearing on a hawthorn tree, and the seal of the chapter itself bears her on the tower of the castle.
Origin and history
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Thorn formed part of the old apses at the east end of the cathedral until the 1770 renovation, and its dedication is linked to the medieval founding of the town of Santa María de Osma. From the 17th century, chapter documents record its tradition, and since 1600, the townspeople have celebrated their patron saint's feast day alongside Saint Roch, a sign of a well-established patronage. The image was considered miraculous from ancient times, "through whose intercession it has performed many miracles," according to the chapter's records.
Pious tradition, recorded by the cathedral chapter in the 17th century, states that the image was found on a thorn bush surrounding a tower, on the site where El Burgo was later founded, and that the Virgin appeared to a shepherd; hence the name "Our Lady of the Thorn." In recognition, the chapter placed a castle on its seal and, above the tower, the image of the Virgin with the Child, scepter, and fleur-de-lis. This is a devotional account, not critically documented.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
