Prado Nuevo (El Escorial), the Mother of Merciful Love
Europe · Spain
What happened
At the Prado Nuevo estate, in the municipality of El Escorial (Community of Madrid), the laywoman Luz Amparo Cuevas Arteseros (1931-2012) claimed to have begun experiencing inner phenomena in November 1980. The first major "public apparition" occurred on June 14, 1981, when she said she saw the Virgin Mary above an ash tree on the estate. From then on, crowds came to pray the Rosary and listen to the messages she claimed to receive. The devotion refers to Our Lady of Sorrows and, later, to the Mother of the Church and Mother of Merciful Love, devotional titles that appear in the internal documentation of the Prado Nuevo Foundation. May 4, 2002, is indicated as the date of the last communication. There is no record of an ecclesiastical decree legally defining a new title.
The message
According to summaries provided by devotees, the messages emphasized conversion, frequent confession, and the recitation of the Rosary, as well as warnings about the loss of faith, sin, and irreverence toward the Eucharist, with a call to reparation. They also invited people to mortification and to become "souls of reparation," and included references to possible punishments if the world does not convert, in line with other Marian messages of the 20th century. These contents are known through internal transcriptions and have not been adopted by the Magisterium of the Church.
The sanctuary or place today
Around these phenomena, a movement formed, now grouped under the Autonomous Pious Foundation of Our Lady of Sorrows and the association of the faithful linked to the Prado Nuevo Work, which internally refers to itself as "the Reparators." This Work promotes shelters for the elderly and needy and Eucharistic and Marian acts of reparation, with a spiritual style centered on Our Lady of Sorrows. There is no record in open sources of a religious congregation of pontifical right with that name: it is an association of the faithful, recognized at least at the diocesan level, although the apparitions have not been approved. The construction of a chapel and the celebration of worship were authorized at the site.
The Church's position
In 1985, the then Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Ángel Suquía, issued a decree after studying the case, declaring that "the supernatural character of the alleged apparitions and revelations in Prado Nuevo was not established." This is the canonical formula of non constat de supernaturalitate: the supernatural origin of the apparitions is not recognized, but neither are they declared false or diabolical. It is important to distinguish precisely what the Church authorized and what it did not. It did authorize: the veneration of the Mother of God, the celebration of Mass, Eucharistic adoration, and the recitation of the Rosary at the site, with a permanent presence of priests under ecclesiastical supervision, as well as a canonical framework for the charitable work. It neither authorized nor recognized: the apparition as a supernatural event nor the messages attributed to the visionary. El Escorial is now under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Getafe, which has maintained this same stance: a place of prayer with permitted worship, without any pronouncement in favor of its supernatural nature. There is no record of a new decree that revokes or changes the 1985 judgment.
Prudence and discernment
The Church urges prudence because it is easy to confuse two very different things: pastoral permission to pray, celebrate the Eucharist, or venerate the Mother of God in a place, and the approval of apparitions as supernatural. The former has been authorized; the latter is not documented, and therefore no one in the faithful is obliged to believe in these apparitions nor can they present them as matters of faith. It is appropriate to welcome with respect the devotion of those who make pilgrimages, without sensationalism and without attributing certainties that ecclesiastical authority has not provided. And it is important to remember that what is essential is always good and never depends on an extraordinary phenomenon: prayer, conversion, the sacraments, and the Rosary prayed in communion with the Church.
Link with the Rosary
The Rosary has always been central to prayer in Prado Nuevo, and praying it with trust in the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows is always legitimate and good. What is important is to live it in communion with the Church, attentive to the teachings of the pastors, leaving the judgment of extraordinary events to God. Contemplating the Sorrowful Mysteries with Mary unites us to her crucified Son and opens us to Merciful Love.
