Our Lady of Tears of Syracuse
Europe · Italy
What happened
In Syracuse, Sicily, between August 29 and September 1, 1953, a simple plaster relief of the Virgin Mary—a wedding gift to the young couple Angelo and Antonina Iannuso—began to weep in the couple's modest home. The phenomenon, observed for several days, drew crowds and moved the entire city. It is not an apparition in the strict sense, as there is no record of a vision of the Virgin or a locution, but rather a prodigy of weeping associated with an image, known as the Tears of Syracuse. The effigy that wept has been identified by tradition as the Madonna delle Lacrime (Madonna of Tears).
The message of the Virgin
Since it was the weeping of an image and not an apparition with speech, there was no recorded verbal message. The meaning that devotion has interpreted in these tears is Mary's compassion for sinners and her call to conversion and prayer, in continuity with other Marian manifestations of sorrow; this meaning belongs to the devotional interpretation of the event. The power of the sign lies precisely in its eloquent silence: a mother weeping before her people.
The sanctuary today
Devotion to Our Lady of Tears is venerated in Syracuse, where a large modern church was erected in memory of the event, now known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears, elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica. The sanctuary welcomes pilgrims who come to venerate the image and entrust their sorrows to the Virgin; specific details of current visitor numbers are not included in the verified documentation available to us.
The Church's recognition
The element that most contributed to the discernment was the examination of the liquid: the tears collected from the image were subjected to chemical and microscopic analysis, and the result indicated that the fluid had a composition consistent with human tears. On that basis, the Sicilian episcopate issued a unanimous declaration in 1953 recognizing that the reality of the events could not be doubted. There is also a record of a positive assessment by Pius XII regarding the case, recorded in a radio message of October 17, 1954; the full text of his words is not found in the verified sources, so it suffices to say that the Pope positively approved of the event in a subsequent public statement.
A grace that touches the heart
The most distinctive fact about Syracuse is the analysis of the liquid: the examination concluded that those tears had the composition of human tears, a verifiable fact that deeply impressed public opinion and secured the favorable recognition of the episcopate. The simplicity of its origin is also moving: a very humble plaster picture, a wedding gift to an ordinary couple, became the center of immense devotion for the entire city. This transformation of an ordinary household object into a focus of pilgrimage is well attested to by the fountains of the sanctuary.
Link with the Rosary
Mary's tears invite us to console her Heart with prayer. Praying the Rosary before the Madonna delle Lacrime is to respond to those tears with conversion and supplication for sinners, which the Virgin has so often requested, allowing each mystery to lovingly dry the Mother's tears.
