What happened

In Quito, the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception, belonging to the Poor Clares, has existed since the 17th century. There, an image of the Virgin Mary called Our Lady of Good Success of the Purification is venerated. Tradition holds that the Virgin appeared repeatedly to Mother Mariana de Jesús Torres, a nun whose existence is historically documented. She instructed the Virgin to carve an image of the Virgin and spoke to her of future events, including times of crisis of faith and morals in later centuries. Many of these messages are known through accounts written or rearranged centuries later, so the detailed content of the dialogues and prophecies must be classified as pious tradition without full historical confirmation. What is documented with certainty is the existence of the image, the nun, and a deeply rooted devotion.

The message of the Virgin

According to tradition, Our Lady of Good Success calls for a life of reparation for sins, especially those of consecrated persons; she announces a time of great moral and doctrinal crisis, accompanied by the promise of a special intervention by Mary and the restoration of faith; and she exhorts us to trust in God's mercy and to faithful love for the Church, even in times of darkness. It is a devotion that is not obligatory for the Catholic faith.

The sanctuary today

The sanctuary is the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception in Quito's historic center, where the original image is venerated. The statue, a three-dimensional image, is clothed and depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. It receives pilgrims, especially around the Feast of the Purification on February 2nd. The devotion has spread internationally, but its heart remains the Conceptionist monastery and the Archdiocese of Quito.

The Church's recognition

Church approval has focused primarily on the devotion, the title, and the image, recognized as legitimate by the local Church authority, now the Archdiocese of Quito. There is no formal decree approving the apparitions with the same degree as Lourdes or Fatima; it is an approved cult, without an explicit declaration of supernaturality regarding every detail of the visions.

A grace that touches the heart

Out of prudence, we will only mention what is documented at the level of worship: the image's reputation for miracles is historically well-established, with votive offerings and expressions of gratitude deposited in the monastery, testimonies of healings and particular graces recounted by devotees and recorded in the convent chronicles. There is no formal cause of miracles subjected to expert examination as in canonization processes, so the only certain assertion is that the image has been the object of continuous attribution of favors; the more detailed accounts belong to the realm of piety and have not been critically verified.

Link with the Rosary

The life of the Conceptionist monastery, the cradle of this devotion, is woven with contemplative prayer, and the Rosary accompanies the trusting expectation that Our Lady of Good Success asks of her faithful. To pray it is to live that loving fidelity to the Church in the midst of trials, sustained by the hand of the Mother.
