The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul was consecrated in 1864, after nearly two decades of construction. It is the largest cathedral in Pennsylvania and one of the largest in the United States. Declared a minor basilica in 1976, it was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1979. Its Italian Renaissance architecture makes it a landmark of Philadelphia's religious heritage.
