Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"The Traveling Virgin of Antipolo: The Image That Crossed the Pacific"

In the Philippines, Our Lady of Peace and Safe Voyage, known simply as the Virgin of Antipolo, is venerated with great affection. Tradition holds that the image, a dark-skinned carving, was brought from Mexico around 1626 by Governor Juan Niño de Tabora and entrusted to the care of the city of Antipolo on the island of Luzon.
Its title of "Buen Viaje" (Good Voyage) is no coincidence. During the century that the Manila galleon trade lasted, the image was carried on board several times during the long and perilous Pacific crossings between Manila and Acapulco. Maritime tradition attributes to its presence on board protection against storms and shipwrecks on those months-long voyages across the open sea.
Over time, Antipolo became one of the Philippines' major pilgrimage centers. Even today, during the month of May, crowds make the ascent to the shrine, and many faithful entrust their travels to its protection. It is one of the archipelago's most beloved Marian devotions.
It is important to distinguish between what is certain and what has been passed down. The image's antiquity, its Mexican origin, and its centuries-long veneration in Antipolo belong to the history of Philippine devotion. The specific dates and the exact number of the galleon's voyages, as well as the particular instances of protection at sea, are transmitted primarily as maritime and devotional tradition; the precise details of each voyage are not documented with the same certainty. The narrative, as a whole, is a beautiful portrait of Marian faith among seafarers.
