On October 12, 2008, a form fell during communion in Sokółka. The communiqué of the Białystok Metropolitan Curia documents the custody, examination of two pathologists and the ecclesial commission, which concluded that the event does not contradict the faith of the Church.
On 12 October 2008
The official communiqué of the Metropolitan Curia of Białystok reports that, while communion was distributed in the church of San Antonio de Padua, a form fell from the Copon. The priest picked her up and placed her in the vasculum by the sacred. After the Mass, its contents were transferred to another container kept in the safe of the sacristy.
On October 19, when the box was opened, a blood-looking stain was observed in the submerged form. On October 29, the vessel was taken to the sacred of the chapel of the rectory; the next day the form was removed from the water and deposited on a body.
The ecclesial commission
Archbishop Edward Ozorowski set up a commission on 30 March 2009. This questioned the witnesses, studied the custody sequence and examined the findings of the pathologists. The communiqué was signed by Chancellor Andrzej Kakareko on 14 October 2009.
The commission stated that the form in which the sample was taken was the same as that transferred from the sacristy to the chapel's sacrary and that it did not see any intervention by others. The minutes were sent to the Apostolic Nunciature of Warsaw.
The opinion cited accurately
On January 7, 2009, a sample was taken, studied independently by two teachers specializing in pathomorphology at the Medical University of Białystok. The statement summarizes its conclusion: the material indicated heart muscle tissue or, among the tissues of living organisms, it was the one that looked the most like it.
This wording is more prudent than many headlines. The page does not "look like" an absolute identification, nor does it add as an official conclusion that it was a living agony heart or that its union with bread is impossible to reproduce. The complete histological file for an independent scientific assessment is also not available here.
Qué declaró la Curia
The Curia concluded that the event of Sokółka does not oppose the faith of the Church and rather confirms it. He presented it as a call to the ministers to distribute the Body of the Lord with faith and attention and to the faithful to receive it with reverence.
This is a positive ecclesial assessment and allows us to understand the current public veneration. It is not a dogmatic definition of a new article of faith. The real presence of Christ in the Eucharist does not depend on a Catholic accepting a particular interpretation of the event.
The present sanctuary
The church of San Antonio de Padua is today the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Sacrament. The community retains the memory of the event, receives pilgrims and presents the statement of the Curia as the main reference. Veneration is integrated into mass, worship and catechesis.
Visible custody recalls a relicary or a small Eucharistic custody; behind the glass the body is observed with the preserved mark. A close-up image is not reproduced here: it offers free photography of the place to avoid sensationalist uses and help to correctly locate the pilgrimage.
Verified location
The sanctuary is located in the church of San Antonio de Padua of Sokółka, voivodship of Podlaquia, Poland. The corrected marker uses the coordinates 53.4077080, 23.5039607, corresponding to the building. The previous one was displaced approximately 160 meters.
The official page for celebrations, access and attention to groups should be consulted before travelling. Pastoral conditions may change and the map does not replace the information of the sanctuary.
World map classification
Sokółka is classified as "contemporary Eucharistic phenomenon with authorized public veneration." The label contains the commission, the communication and the cult in force, keeping separate the pastoral judgment and the possibility of an independent scientific analysis.
Spiritual feeling
The pastoral conclusion of the Curia is also the spiritual key: to communicate with faith and reverence. The sign does not invite you to seek extraordinary matter, but to rediscover Christ who gives himself sacramentally in every mass.
True worship leads to the examination of conscience, reconciliation and service. Whoever kneels before the Most Holy is called to rise to care for those who are hungry, alone or in need of comfort.
