In Altötting, a village of Bavaria, is the Chapel of Grace (Gnadenkapelle), the most important Marian sanctuary in Germany. The image of the Virgin Mary is one of the most venerated in the country.
The Chapel of Grace
Tradition tells that in 1489, a child was drowned and resurrected by the intercession of the Virgin Mary. Since then, Altötting is a place of pilgrimage.
Every year, millions of pilgrims arrive in Altötting to venerate the Virgin. Pope Benedict XVI visited Altötting in 2006.
