The Virgin of Guadalupe
appearance
The Virgin Mary appeared to San Juan Diego on the hill of the Tepeyac.
In December 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared six times to San Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, an indigenous nahuatl, on the hill of the Tepeyac, near Mexico City.
La tilma milagrosa
The Virgin asked Juan Diego to build a church in that place. When the bishop did not believe him, Juan Diego showed his tylma (blanket) where the image of the Virgin miraculously appeared. The image remains incorrupted after almost 500 years.
The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron of Mexico and of all Latin America. His sanctuary receives millions of pilgrims each year, one of the most visited in the world.
