The Virgin Mary indicated where to build the Basilica of St. Mary the Major.
According to legend, in 358, the Virgin Mary appeared to Pope Liberio and a patrician couple in Rome. He told them to build a church in the place they would find covered in snow in the middle of summer.
The miracle of the snow
On August 5, 358, a snow fell miraculously on the Esquilino hill in Rome, marking the plane of the future basilica. Pope Liberio confirmed the miracle and ordered the construction of the Basilica of St. Mary the Major.
The holiday of the Virgin of the Snow is held on August 5. The basilica is one of the four papal basilics of Rome.
