According to the Catholic tradition, on October 2, 40 AD, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Apostle James the Major in Zaragoza, Spain, while evangelizing the region. The Virgin was alive and in a glorious body, standing on a column of jasper.

La Virgen María le dijo a Santiago: «Esta casa será dedicada a mi nombre, y en ella serán concedidas las gracias que se pidan.» La Virgen dejó la columna (el Pilar) como regalo y pidió que se construyera una iglesia en ese lugar.
The Basilica of the Pilar of Zaragoza is the most important Marian sanctuary in Spain and one of the most visited in the world. Every 12 October, millions of faithful celebrate the feast of the Pilar.
