On the hill of Santa Cruz, over the city of Oran, the statue of Our Lady of the Holy Cross, the most important Marian sanctuary in Algeria, rises. It was built by French settlers in 1850.
The statue that looks at the Mediterranean
The statue of the Virgin Mary is 8 meters high and looks at the Mediterranean. The faithful believe that the Virgin protects the sailors and Christians of Algeria.
After Algeria's independence in 1962, most Christians left, but the statue remains. Every year, the few remaining Christians go up to Santa Cruz to venerate the Virgin.
