The Virgin of Luján is patron of Argentina. The miracle of the oxen who didn't want to move forward.
In 1630, a cart with two images of the Virgin was traveling from Buenos Aires. On the way, the oxen refused to move forward. Only when one of the boxes was removed, the oxen followed. The image left was the Virgin of Luján.
Manuel, a slave who looked after the image, watched it every night. When they tried to take her somewhere else, the Virgin always returned to her hermitage. The faithful interpreted this as the will of the Virgin to stay in Luján.
Belgrano, San Martín and the proceres of independence visited the sanctuary and donated war trophies. Today, more than 2 million people walk every year from Buenos Aires to Luján.
