History of Marian devotion in Armenia

Christianity in Armenia has a history that dates back to apostolic times (in the case of some Eastern traditions) or to the arrival of European missionaries in the XVII- 17th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, although practiced by a minory of the population, has a significant presence among the local Catholic communities. Mary is venerated as the Mother of God and protector of Christians in contexts where they are often minory.

The Marian advocacy in Armenia reflects both the missionary tradition (Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, the Immaculate Conception) and the local expressions of Marian piety. The Christian communities, through their parishes, schools and social works, keep alive the devotion to Mary as the Mother of all peoples.

The Armenian Catholic minority, both of Armenian Catholic and Latin rite, keeps Marian devotion alive in the country. The church of the Armenian Martyrs in Gyumri, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Yerevan and the monastery of Khor Virap, where St. Gregory was imprisoned, are places of special Marian devotion. Armenia, which suffered the genocide of 1915 and decades of Soviet persecution, sees in the Virgin Mary a symbol of survival and hope. The Mother of God is invoked as the protector of the Armenian people and the Mother of all who suffer.
