St. Teresa of Gweru, under the protection of Mary Helper

The Catholic Cathedral of Gweru, in the Midlands region of Zimbabwe, is dedicated to Santa Teresa. The diocese, however, has as its patron Mary Auxiliary, whose feast celebrates on May 24: the whole local Church lives under Marian protection.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The seat was born in 1946 as an apostolic prefecture; it was raised to the diocese in 1955 and renamed the diocese of Gweru in 1982.
  • Although the cathedral honors Santa Teresa, the diocesan patron is Maria Auxiliadora, with a feast on May 24.
  • The diocese covers almost 30,000 square kilometres with some 443,500 Catholics and 33 parishes.
  • The diocese itself describes its life of prayer from the cathedral to the smallest mission: daily Eucharist, Rosary and Novies.
