The Sleeping of the Mother of God in Plovdiv
The Catholic Cathedral of Plovdiv is dedicated to San Luis and the great Marian temple of the city is the Orthodox Cathedral of the Sleeping of the Mother of God, in the old town, whose current building dates from 1844 on a site with church since the 9th century.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The Catholic Cathedral of St. Louis, which was erected in the 1850s, received in 1861 the first organ of Bulgaria and kept the remains of Princess Mary Luisa.
- After the fire of 1931, Saint Louis was reconsecrated on May 8, 1932 by Archbishop Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, then pontifical representative in Bulgaria and future Saint John XXIII.
- The Orthodox Cathedral of the Dormition crown the hill of the old town: the pseudobasilica of three ships of 1844, with iconostasis of the school of Debar.
- The liturgy in the Bulgarian language resonated in 1859 and 1860, the milestone of the Bulgarian ecclesial rebirth.
