Ntra. Sra. de Gracia de Praia - The pro-cathedral of Cape Verde
The pro-cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, built between 1894 and 1902 in neoclassical style in the Plateau of Praia, is the seat of the diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde, erected in 1533 by Clement VII. His patron party is held on August 15, the day of the Assumption of the Virgin.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde was created in 1533; its first seat was in the current Cidade Velha and will celebrate its 500 years of evangelization in 2033.
- The present temple was raised between 1894 and 1902 in neoclassical style, with the façade to the square Alexandre Albuquerque.
- Every 15 August, a national festive, thousands of faithful accompany the image of Our Lady of Grace in procession through the streets of the Plateau, with Eucharist presided over by Cardinal Arlindo Gomes Furtado.
- The patron party has been prepared since August 2 with Marian day, vigil, procession of candles and day of forgiveness.
