Ntra. Sra. de la Merced de Kolonia (Pohnpei)
The Catholic parish of Kolonia, the capital of the state of Pohnpei, is Our Lady of Mercy (Our Lady of the Merced), of the Diocese of the Carolines. Next to the mission is the Catholic bell tower of 1909, raised by the Capuchin parents and registered in the National Register of Historic Places.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The Catholic bell tower of 1909, built by the Capuchin and known as the bell tower of the "Ponape Cathedral," was registered in the Register of Historical Places in 1980.
- The mission was ruined after the bombing of World War II; since 1947, Jesuit Hugh Costigan has reconstructed church, convent and school, from Our Lady of Mercy school.
- The diocesan cathedral is that of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Weno (Chuuk) - also Marian advocation.
- Pohnpei's faith is rooted in the Spanish and German cappuccino missions of the late 19th century.

The parish of the Merced keeps the memory of the Catholic mission of Pohnpei: capuchin, destruction in war and Jesuit reconstruction. Its centenary bell tower remains the visible sign of Marian faith on the island.
