Our Lady of Avioth

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The basilica of Our Lady of Avioth is in the town of Avioth, department of Meuse, region of the Great East, France. The point of the map corresponds to the cult building identified by OpenStreetMap as Basilique Notre-Dame d'Avioth. The fact sheet refers to the basilica and its Marian sanctuary; it does not assign to the co-ordinate all the pilgrimage places of the region.

Documented history

The official site of Avioth places the first written mention of the town in 1180 and notes that the existence of the people is clearly attested in the 13th century. In July 1223, Louis IV, Count of Chiny, granted freedoms to its inhabitants. Avioth thus became a "new city," with fairs and markets that encouraged the growth of the community.

In this context of prosperity, according to the official history of the place, the works of the church dedicated to Our Lady began. Around 1250 a small Romanesque chapel was erected in the centre of the village, which housed the venerated statue. The influx of pilgrims led to the expansion of the chapel and the construction of the monumental temple that still dominates the people. The official source speaks of a miraculous statue, but that expression is preserved here as the language of the sanctuary and not as an independent decree on a prodigy.

The Gothic basilica was built in several phases. The oldest corresponds to approximately 1250-1310 and includes the lower parts of the western and lateral towers. Other medieval campaigns completed the choir, the sacristy and the oriental structures; between 1375 and 1400 the western and eastern parts were joined and were carried out with great sculptural wealth. The official site describes a basic building with central, lateral, chapel and sculptural elements on the facades.

Since 1840 Prosper Mérimée has recognized the heritage value of the whole and the protection of the Recevresse and, subsequently, of the church was decided. Monumental conservation is part of Avioth's documented history and allows you to contemplate a sanctuary where you can join pilgrimage, Gothic architecture and local memory.

Tradition

The tradition of Avioth is organized around the statue of Our Lady and the growth of the pilgrimage. Official history states that the small Romanesque chapel was soon short to welcome those who came to the fame of the image. This fact sheet distinguishes the historical existence of the chapel and the temple, which is documented, from the miraculous interpretation of the origin of the statue.

Legend

The official site also retains a section of legends and curiosities, including stories about the discovery of the statue. In the absence of an ecclesial document that declares the finding supernatural, these narrations are presented as legends or traditions of the sanctuary. The beauty of the building and the antiquity of the pilgrimage do not automatically turn every story into an approved fact.

Ecclesial State

It consists of a Catholic basilica dedicated to Our Lady, a public Marian cult and a tradition of pilgrimage documented by local history and architectural heritage. The sources used do not contain a formal pronunciation about an apparition or the supernatural origin of the statue. It is therefore registered as an permitted sanctuary of worship, without presenting it as an approved apparition.

Anecdotes and stories

Avioth retains a particularly rich heritage. The western facade brings together towers, large voids, a portal with numerous statues, a representation of the Final Judgment and a great rosacea. The Recevresse, linked to the whole, was one of the first protected pieces when Prosper Mérimée intervened in the conservation of the monument. The official site itself keeps away from the statue, pilgrimage, prayers, coronation parties and various curiosities.

The history of the people helps to understand the sanctuary: the Roman ways, the medieval fairs and the privileges granted in 1223 created a framework for the movement of people and exchanges. The basilica is not only an isolated building, but the religious center of a small town that preserves the memory of centuries of pilgrims. Visiting it can be an experience of prayer, art and history, with respect for what is documented and what belongs to tradition.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of God, accompanies those who come to Avioth seeking comfort and hope. Pray for us before Jesus Christ, that we may know how to recognize beauty, take care of the heritage received and live faith with humility. May those who venerate your image find in it an invitation to love God, to serve the neighbor and to walk in the truth. Amen.
