Marian devotion
Our Lady of Belmopan
Belmopan, Belice
The Brazilian Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the country's capital.
In Belmopán, the capital of Belize, the Cathedral of Santa Maria is the center of the Catholic faith. The Jesuit missionaries established devotion in the 17th century.
Faith in the English-speaking country of Central America
Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America. Catholics are a significant minority, about 40% of the population. The Virgin Mary is the mother who protects them in a country of cultural diversity.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects the Belizean Catholics from the hurricanes that hit the Caribbean. The faithful pray the Rosary before the storms, asking for the protection of the Virgin.
