Marian devotion
Our Lady of Nom Pen
Nom Pen, Camboya
Cambodian Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the country's capital.
In Nom Pen, the capital of Cambodia, the small Catholic community venerates the Virgin Mary. The French missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith after genocide
Cambodia suffered the genocide of the Khmer Rojos (1975- 1979), which exterminated 25 per cent of the population. The Catholics were persecuted and their churches destroyed.
After the genocide, the survivors rebuilt their churches. The Virgin Mary is the mother who comforted them in suffering and gave them hope to rebuild.
