Ntra. Mrs. de la Candelaria, patron of Sonsonate
Santa María de Candelaria is the patron of Sonsonate and is venerated in the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, the main church of the diocese. The first image of the patron came to the city from Florence in 1604, at the request of Bishop Fray Juan Ramírez of Arellano.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The first image of the patron came from Florence in 1604 and was placed in the ancient temple of Our Lady of the Merced.
- As that temple deteriorated, the image passed to the church of the Most Holy Trinity, blessed in its current building in 1887 and raised to cathedral in 1986.
- With the transfer was born the Feria de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, officially established by decree of 1896.
- The employers' parties continue for weeks and attract devotees from Guatemala, particularly from Esquipulas.

The Candelaria is the raison d'être of the Sonsonatecas: more than four centuries of devotion around a Florentine image of 1604, guarded today in the diocesan cathedral.
