The Catholic Churches of Chengdu
Chengdu, Sichuan, China
Sichuan province, known as the "land of abundance," houses one of the oldest and most resilient Catholic communities in inner China. Chengdu, its capital, has been the center of evangelization in the Chinese west since the 17th century.
History of the Catholic presence in Sichuan
The first missionaries to reach Sichuan were the Jesuits in the 17th century. Father Lodovico Buglio, an Italian Jesuit, worked in the region during the period of the early Qing dynasty. However, it was in the 19th century that the Sichuan Mission was consolidated under the leadership of the Paris Foreign Mission Society (MEP).
In 1856, Sichuan was raised to apostolic vicariate, and in 1946 he became an archdiocese. The province was the scene of periodic persecution, especially during the Boxers Rebellion (1900) and the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949).
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Chengdu
The Chengdu Cathedral, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, was built in 1897 in a neo-Gothic style. Located in the heart of the city, it has been the center of Catholic life in Sichuan for more than a century. The current building is the result of several reconstructions, the last after the damage suffered during the Cultural Revolution.
The cathedral houses an image of the Immaculate Conception that dates back to the late 19th century, brought by French missionaries. The Sichhaunese faithful have a particular devotion to this advocation, celebrating their feast on December 8 with solemn processions and masses.
Other notable churches in Chengdu
In addition to the cathedral, Chengdu has several historical churches:
Iglesia de San José: Built in 1910 by French missionaries, this church served as a parish for Catholics in the western district of the city. Its architecture combines neo-Gothic elements with Chinese decorative motifs.
Church of the Sacred Heart: Built in 1925, this church was the center of pastoral activity among Chengdu university students. During the communist persecution, she was converted into a warehouse and later restored to veneration in the 1990s.
The martyrs of Sichuan
The province of Sichuan has given many martyrs to the Church. During the persecution of 1815, Father Gabriel- Taurin Dufresse was executed in Chengdu. In 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion, several Chinese missionaries and faithful were killed by their faith.
The 120 martyrs of China canonized by St. John Paul II in 2000 include several Sichuan natives, a testimony of the vitality of faith in this region.
The faith in Sichuan today
The archdiocese of Chengdu now has an active Catholic community, although subject to the restrictions of the Chinese government. The cathedral celebrates daily masses and is a place of pilgrimage for the faithful of the whole province. The Catholic community of Sichuan has kept alive its tradition of Marian devotion, especially to the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Perpetual Relief.
