The Cathedral of Hong Kong: the Immaculate Conception

Hong Kong, China

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Hong Kong is the heart of Catholic life in the former British colony. Located in the district of Central, the cathedral has been a center of Marian devotion and pastoral activity since the mid-19th century.

History of the Cathedral

The Hong Kong Cathedral was built in 1888 by the missionaries of the Institute of Foreign Missions of Milan (PIME). The building, in a neo-Gothic style, was designed by the architect Crawley and has been restored several times over the centuries.

The cathedral has been a center of Catholic life in Hong Kong since its construction. Here the first masses were held in the British colony, and here the missionaries established their contact with the local Chinese community.

Devotion to the Immaculate Conception

The dedication of the cathedral to the Immaculate Conception reflects the deep Marian devotion of the Catholics of Hong Kong. The image of the Immaculate Conception venerated in the cathedral has been the object of a popular devotion over the centuries.

The feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) is one of the most important celebrations of the cathedral. The faithful come in mass to participate in solemn masses and processions.

The cathedral during the persecution

During the Japanese occupation (1941-1945), the cathedral was damaged but not destroyed. The Catholic community of Hong Kong kept the faith alive during the years of occupation, celebrating mass in secret and caring for the sick and the needy.

During the Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976) in mainland China, Hong Kong became a refuge for Chinese Catholics fleeing persecution. The Hong Kong Cathedral was a reception and pastoral centre for refugees.

The cathedral today

At present, the Hong Kong Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Hong Kong. Celebrate daily masses in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Tagalo, reflecting the diversity of the city's Catholic community. The cathedral is also an important meeting point between the Catholic Church and Hong Kong civil society.
