The Catholic Churches of Kunming

Kunming, Yunnan, China

Kunming, the "city of eternal spring," the capital of Yunnan, houses one of China's most diverse Catholic communities. The province of Yunnan, border to Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, has been a place of encounter between multiple cultures and religious traditions.

History of Evangelization in Yunnan

The province of Yunnan was evangelized by the missionaries of the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris (MEP) in the 19th century. In 1840, the Apostolic Vicariate of Yunnan was established, covering a vast region of southwestern China. The missionaries had to overcome enormous geographical and climatic difficulties to reach remote mountain communities.

The strategic position of Yunnan, as the gateway to South-East Asia, facilitated the spread of the Catholic faith. The missionaries established churches, schools and hospitals that became centres of evangelization.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Kunming

The cathedral of Kunming, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was built in 1876 by French missionaries. The building, in a neo-Gothic style, was designed by the French architect Alfred Gaborit. The cathedral is 35 meters long and its tower is 28 meters high.

The interior of the cathedral houses a major altar of marble imported from Italy, as well as a series of vitrals representing scenes of the life of Jesus and of the Virgin Mary. The cathedral has been restored several times, the last time in 2003.

Yunnan caves and Marian tradition

The province of Yunnan has a unique Marian tradition: that of "apparitions in the fog." According to local tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared in several caves of the Yunnan mountains during the 19th century, protecting the persecuted Catholics. Although these apparitions have not been officially approved by the Church, the popular devotion to the "Virgin of the Fist" is still alive among the faithful of the region.

The caves of Yunnan are now a place of pilgrimage for the Catholics of the region. The faithful come to pray the rosary and ask for the protection of the Virgin, especially during the persecutions.

Persecution and survival

During the Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976), the Kunming Cathedral was desecrated and converted into a warehouse. The vitrals were destroyed and the sacred images burned. However, the clandestine Catholic community kept the faith alive, celebrating masses in private houses.

After the religious opening of the 1980s, the cathedral was restored and returned to worship. The Catholic community of Yunnan has kept alive its tradition of Marian devotion, especially to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the "Virgin of the Fist."

Kunming today

At present, the diocese of Kunming has a diverse Catholic community, including the faithful of the ethnic minorities of Yunnan. The cathedral celebrates daily masses and is a place of pilgrimage for the faithful of the whole province. The city of Kunming, as an old border post, retains a rich Christian heritage that includes the cathedral and various parish churches.
