Mother of God Cesárea-Bórovskaya of Usvyaty

In Usvyaty, south of the Russian region of Pskov, the memory of the Mother of God has been linked for centuries to the Cesárea-Bórovskaya icon. His history brings together a medieval tradition of finding, the prayer of a people during the cholera epidemic of 1859 and a procession that is still part of the local religious memory.

A name that keeps memories

Russian name of the image is Цесарская-Боровская икона Божией Матери, transliterated here as Cesárea-Borovskaya a. "Cesarean area" relates it to an ancient image of the Mother of God known by tradition since 792. "Bórovskaya" recalls the site called Bor, where, according to ecclesial tradition, this copy was found near a cemetery church in the mid-12th century.

The ancient descriptions speak of a table of twenty by fourteen vershoks, approximately 89 by 62 centimeters, painted according to forms of the former Russian iconography. It was covered with a silver curl and golden crowns. These data describe the historical icon; they should not automatically move to contemporary copy without a material inventory of the parish.

From Bor to the church of the Transfiguration

Tradition tells that the image was taken from the church of the Cemetery of Bor to the temple of the Transfiguration of Usvyaty. This transfer made the local church a center of veneration and linked the image to the life of the population forever.

The exact place of Bor and the site of that church have not yet been able to geo-refer safely. Out of respect for history, the map does not invent a second point: it shows only the current church, whose location is proven.

The cholera epidemic of 1859

The most remembered episode occurred in 1859, when cholera punished Usvyaty and its surroundings. According to the ecclesial memory collected by the diocese, the inhabitants asked to celebrate a procession with the image. That same day the disease would have started to decrease. The next day they went back to the town with the icon and tradition attributed to the intercession of the Mother of God the cessation of the epidemic.

Rezaelrosario.org retains this story as favor attributed by local ecclesial tradition. It does not present it as an independent medical conclusion, but as the way in which generations of faithful understood and thanked that event.

The feast and the procession

The sources set in 1859 the authorization of the Holy Synod to celebrate the image annually on May 29 according to the Julian calendar, which now corresponds to the 11 June the civil calendar. The synthesis published by the diocese adds that since 1863 a solemn celebration was established accompanied by a mass procession. The difference may reflect the initial authorization and subsequent consolidation of the practice; the original synodal document remains to be located.

A heritage source of Pskov states that the new church of the Transfiguration retains a copy of the ancient image and that the procession continues to be held in memory of the event of 1859. Until a recent parish chronicle is available, the map points to the temple, but does not draw an exact route whose streets and stops are not documented.

The revered copy today

The contemporary copy is found in the church of the Transfiguration of the Lord of Usvyaty. It is not a secondary presence: in it continues the prayer of the community and the memory of the ancient icon. But a venerated copy should not be presented as if it were necessarily the medieval table. The location of the original and its old curl remains to be confirmed.
