History of Marian devotion in Chad

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Chad, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.

In Chad, the Virgin is venerated under various calls, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

Mary in the heart of the Chadian Sahel

Chad, un país extenso y diverso que abarca desde el desierto del Sahara hasta la sabana del Sahel, tiene una comunidad católica pequeña pero ferviente (aproximadamente el 20% de la población). Marian life in Chad develops in a context of poverty and climate challenges, but Chadian Catholics maintain a joyful and deep faith. The Rosary prayer is a common practice in rural communities, where families meet at sunset to pray under the mango trees. The diocese of Laï, in the south of the country, is known for its intense Marian life, with numerous parishes dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Bishop of Laï walks long distances by bike to visit the scattered communities, bearing the image of the Virgin and the comfort of faith. The feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) is celebrated in Yamena with a procession that runs through the streets of the capital.

Chad, the largest country in Africa without an exit to the sea, has a Catholic Church working tirelessly for peace and development. The Cathedral of Mary Immaculate, Mother of the Church in Yamena, was built with an architectural design that evokes a desert tent, symbolizing the pilgrim Church in the Sahel. The image of Mary Immaculate, a size of mahogany wood brought from France, is venerated by the Chadian faithful who see in Mary's purity a model of Christian life in the midst of a challenging environment. The feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) is celebrated with a procession that runs through the streets of Yamena.

La arquidiócesis de Yamena (N’Djamena), erigida en 1955, abarca la capital de Chad y sus alrededores. El arzobispo, monseñor Djibrine Mbairo, ha hecho de la catedral de María Inmaculada, Madre de la Iglesia, un centro de irradiación de la devoción mariana. La catedral, construida en 1965 con un diseño que evoca las tiendas de campaña del desierto, es el símbolo de la presencia católica en el Sahel.
