The Virgin of Carmen is patron of Chile. His image was brought by the conquerors.
At Cerro San Cristóbal in Santiago, the Virgin of Carmen presides over the city with its arms extended. The image was crowned by the Pope in 1926.
Los chilenos la llaman «La Stamata» y cada 16 de julio celebran su fiesta con procesiones y cantos. Los marineros la veneran como protectora del Pacífico.
Tradition tells that during the 1960 earthquake, the greatest ever registered, the faithful prayed to the Virgin and the city was protected.
