In the Yunnan mountains, the Yi Catholics venerate the Virgin in natural caves. Tradition tells that the Virgin appeared in a cave to protect Christians from persecution.
The shepherds say that the Virgin appears in the morning fog, walking among the mountains. When there is fog, the shepherds pray the Rosary and know that the Virgin is near.
The devotion to the Virgin of the caves has survived the Cultural Revolution because it was lived in secret, in the depths of the mountain.
