In the province of Henan, Catholics venerate the Virgin as a protector of the Yellow River. Tradition tells that the Virgin appeared on the waters of the river to calm a flood that threatened to destroy a Catholic people.
The faithful prayed the Rosary and the Virgin extended her mantle over the river, stopping the waters. Since then, the Virgin of the Yellow River is the protector of the coastal peoples.
Every year, the Catholics of Henan celebrate a floating procession on the Yellow River in honor of the Virgin.
