In the heart of the old Shuandong street, among the traditional constructions of southern Anhui, the church of Mary Helper of Christians. His Gothic presence and the pilgrimage that brings together the faithful of the region since the beginning of the 20th century make this place one of the historical Marian references of the Church in Anhui.

The birth of the community
The modern history of the church began after the Taiping war, in a region deeply altered by violence, depopulation and migration. Among the new inhabitants of Shuandong were Catholic families from other provinces. The pastoral care of that population led to the establishment of a permanent mission.
En 1869The priest Jin Shiyu acquired a land from a Wu family. The following year the construction of a church dedicated to Mary Auxiliary began. The building became one of the most important Catholic churches in southern Anhui and a pastoral centre for Xuancheng, Ninguo and neighbouring districts.
Mary, Help of Christians
The title "Helper of Christians" expresses the Church's confidence in the maternal intercession of Mary in times of difficulty. It does not mean an apparition in Shuandong, but a universal invocation that took root in a specific community and accompanied its growth.
The party is held on May 24. In China it has a special resonance for the great devotion to Mary Helper of Sheshan, but Shuandong has his own history, temple and pilgrimage within Anhui.
From local church to pilgrimage sanctuary
En 1905, Shuandong was declared a place of Marian pilgrimage of Jiangnan's mission. The Catholic documentation relates it at that stage to Tangmuqiao, the Lourdes shrine in Pudong. When the apostolic vicariate of Wuhu was created, Shuandong became 1927 on Marian shrine.
Since then, the faithful have come especially for the feast of Mary Helper. The tradition survived the political interruptions of the twentieth century and continues today: recent chronicles describe the bishop, priests, religious and lay people of Anhui gathered there to celebrate the Eucharist and ask for the Church and the Chinese people.
A Gothic temple within a historic villa
The church is distinguished by its pointed arches, counterstrengths, tower and grey brick factory. European language meets the roofs and walls of the traditional houses of Shuandong, a former commercial population by the Shuiyang River.
The set is not made up of the ship alone. The city cataloguing includes the Church of the Virgin, the priestly residence, the old preparatory seminary and an earlier liturgical building. This configuration allows you to understand the religious, educational and community function that took place.
Protective heritage of Xuancheng
The Government of the Xuanzhou district records the Catholic whole among the cultural properties of the tourist area of the old Shuandong street. It was declared a municipal protection unit in June 2017. The official record highlights both the solidity of the construction and the survival of traditional Chinese architectural techniques within a Western ecclesial program.
Heritage protection does not replace its religious nature: the temple remains a place of worship and pilgrimage. The visitor must respect liturgical times, community prayer and local access standards.
Verified location
The official sources place the whole in the center of the historic street of Shuandong. Commercial mapping provides the general point of the old town, but does not identify the temple. To avoid placing the marker in the generic center of the people, this point was contrasted with satellite image: the main recognizable body of the ecclesial whole is found in 30.7910552, 118.9549935, WGS-84.
A pilgrimage of communion
The recent celebrations present Mary Helper as a mother who leads to Christ and brings the Church together. Prayer for the sick, the families, the country and ecclesial communion occupies a central place. The sanctuary thus recalls that the true help of Mary does not depart from the Gospel: it has the heart to obey Jesus and serve others.

Mary, Help of Christians, turn your maternal look to Shuandong and to the whole Church of Anhui. Hold the families, comfort the sick and grant perseverance to those who proclaim the Gospel. Make our communities live together with Christ, open to forgiveness and willing to serve. It protects the Chinese people and guides our steps on the road to peace. Amen.
