Mary raised to heaven on the heights of Mount Lu
The Assumption proclaims that Mary, finished her earthly life, was brought in body and soul to the glory of heaven. In Lushan the title acquires a unique expressivity: the temple is found between mountains, clouds and forests, and the physical rise provides the pilgrim to contemplate the Christian hope of the resurrection.
The foundation of 1894
The Fides Agency places 1894 the construction of the church by French Lazarist missionaries. Its purpose was to offer a spiritual oasis to the Catholic communities of Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan and the cities of Jiangxi. Chinese heritage documentation also covers the year 1908; both dates may correspond to different stages of construction or completion. This tab keeps the difference visible, without turning chronological uncertainty into artificial certainty.
The sober stone architecture is integrated into the landscape of Lushan. Its walls have gone through more than a century of political and religious changes, and are a memory of a Christian experience that continued even during periods of tribulation.
From the historical temple to the living sanctuary
Lushan is not just an old building. Fides documents pilgrimages of parishes, families, priests, religious and internal migrants. The faithful celebrate the Eucharist, receive the sacrament of reconciliation, pray the way crucis and meditate on the images of the Virgin. There are also unbaptized people who seek silence and inner rest.
In May, a month traditionally dedicated to Mary, the sanctuary is one of the preferred destinations of the Jiangxi communities. The pilgrimage unites the beauty of creation with prayer for the Church and for the needs of the world.
The Matteo Ricci Spiritual Center
En 2013 the Catholic community of Jiangxi established the Matteo Ricci Spiritual Center next to the church. His name honors the Jesuit born in Macerata who entered China in the 16th century, learned his language and culture and sought a respectful encounter between the Gospel and Chinese tradition.
The centre offers hospitality, retreats and training. The presence of congregations of the Holy Spirit, the Sacred Heart, the Franciscan missionaries and the sisters of Saint Teresa of Lisieux shows the ecclesial amplitude of contemporary pilgrimages.
A sanctuary within an exceptional landscape
Mount Lu is located in the south of Jiujiang and is part of an area recognized by UNESCO for its cultural and landscape value. The sanctuary is in Gling, Xiangshan Road. The documented cartographic position of the temple is 29.56639, 115.97167. It is incorporated into the map with the title of the Assumption, avoiding confusing it with nearby Protestant temples of the same mountain set.
The spirituality of Lushan
The pilgrim comes up to return with a renewed look. Mary Asunta recalls that the destiny of the person is not oblivion, but full communion with God. The stillness of the mountain invites you to leave the noise, examine life, reconcile and learn from Mary a complete availability to the divine will.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Assumption of Lushan
Holy Mary, raised to the glory of heaven, accompanies those who go up to Mount Lu in search of peace and hope. Save the Christian communities of China, strengthen those who suffer and teach us to contemplate creation as a gift of the Father. May we, following your Son, walk towards life that does not end. Our Lady of the Assumption of Lushan, pray for us. Amen.
