A community born in the 17th century
The documentary tradition places the Catholic origins of Jinjiaxiang during the reign of Chongzhen in the final stage of the Ming dynasty. Christian families settled in the area and maintained faith through difficult times. Over the centuries, the place came to house an episcopal residence and Jesuit missionary activity.
The dedication to the Immaculate Conception expresses a central conviction of the Catholic faith: Mary was preserved from original sin by God's grace, in attention to the merits of Jesus Christ. The advocation is not based here on a particular apparition, but on the liturgical and persevering life of the community.
The ordination of St. Andrew Kim Taegon
El August 17, 1845Bishop Jean- Joseph- Jean- Baptiste Ferreol ordered the Korean deacon Andrés Kim Taegon to be a priest in Jinjiaxiang. The young man then returned to Korea to serve a harshly persecuted Church and suffered martyrdom in 1846. It was canonized by John Paul II in Seoul in 1984.
This ordination explains why pilgrims from South Korea visit Jinjiaxiang. The presence of a relic and a monument dedicated to the saint preserves the link between the Shanghai community and the history of Korean Catholicism.
Destruction, transfer and reconstruction
The Jinjiaxiang buildings went through wars, political campaigns and successive reconstructions. The old set was finally demolished in 2001 within an urban operation. The community received a new location about a mile away and the present temple was built there.
The new church was consecrated in 2004. Its design evokes a ship, a Christian symbol of the Church that sails supported by Christ. It continues the celebration of faith and welcomes groups of pilgrims, especially Koreans.
A Marian House between China and Korea
Jinjiaxiang has a unique identity. It is a Chinese church dedicated to the Immaculate and, at the same time, a place loved by Korean Catholics. In her history, Mary accompanies communities that had to preserve faith amid persecutions, displacements and material losses.
Shanghai's municipal information includes the church among the Catholic temples where a Sunday Mass is held in Korean. This present pastoral service shows that the bond is not limited to memory: it is still alive in shared prayer.
Verified location
The current building is located in 80 Zihuai Roadin Pudong. The open mapping identifies the property in 31.22976, 121.55680. These coordinates correspond to the rebuilt temple, which is the place accessible to the community and to the pilgrims today.
Spirituality of the Immaculate
To contemplate Mary Immaculate is to contemplate God's free initiative and a creature's full response to her love. In Jinjiaxiang, this spirituality is linked with the missionary availability of St. Andrew Kim: to receive the grace to offer his own life in the service of Christ and of his brothers.
Prayer to Our Lady of Jinjiaxiang
Mary Immaculate, Mother of the Church, who accompanied the perseverant faith of Jinjiaxiang, guards the Christians of China and Korea. Through the intercession of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, he gives strength to those who proclaim the Gospel, comfort to those who suffer and unity to peoples. Make us faithful disciples of your Son, willing to serve with humility and courage. Amen.
