Huzhuang, a historic Catholic community
The Catholic implantation in Huzhuang dates back to the early 17th century; local studies place the formation of the Christian people around the 1604. For generations, the families preserved and transmitted the faith, until they made the place an important pastoral center in the Pingyin region.
The community became known as the cradle of vocations by the number of priests, religious and bishops originating from it. Its religious landscape is not reduced to a building: it includes the parish church of the village, the Marian shrine of the mountain and other places of prayer around it.
The first capillary of Jianshan
By 1750 the Catholics of Huzhuang raised a small cruciform chapel at the top of Jianthan by their own means. That simple construction resisted for more than a century and set the mountain as a place of prayer.
In 1889 a more ambitious transformation began. Under the pastoral direction of Father Mei Zemin, the chapel was rebuilt according to a model inspired by the French sanctuary of Lourdes. The work was completed in 1895, and the mountain received a specifically Marian identity.
The 1927 Fire and Reconstruction
In the summer of 1927 a lightning caused a fire that destroyed the temple. The diocese authorized its reconstruction in 1928. The project, completed at the end of 1929, recovered the inspiration of Lourdes through a pétrea church of Gothic forms and two slender towers.
The expansion incorporated a long step, seasons to meditate on the Passion of Christ and a Calvary with the figures of Mary and John by the cross. The configuration showed that Marian devotion leads to the paschal mystery of Jesus.
Destruction and rebirth
The sanctuary was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. After the recovery of freedom of veneration, the community undertook a new reconstruction. In 1989 the authorities approved the work and the faithful carried materials to the top, actively participating in the work.
The reconstructed church opened in May 1990. The design sought to preserve the previous Gothic physionomy and restore the access route. In later years, the stations of the crucis, the spaces dedicated to St. Joseph and the Sacred Heart and a meditation journey on the Resurrection were enriched.
The itinerary of the pilgrim
From the door at the foot of the mountain, the pilgrim ascends by about two hundred steps. Along the way he contemplates the fourteen seasons of the cross. Near the top is the Calvary; on it, the church of Our Lady of Lourdes dominates the landscape of hills and pink fields by which it is known Pingyin.
This body rise expresses an inner path: conversion, contemplation of the Passion and encounter with Christ. Mary appears as the disciple who remains by the cross and accompanies the hope of the Resurrection.
Verified location
The shrine building is cartographed on the top of Jianshan, west of Huzhuang, in 36.23952, 116.42474. The geometry corresponds to the OpenStreetMap building 1055969077 and coincides with the ecclesial identification of the sanctuary. The parish church of the Immaculate is located about 600 meters east and is not the point indicated on this map.
A Lourdes born on Chinese land
The advocation refers to the apparitions of Lourdes of 1858, but Jianshan does not appear as the stage of an apparition of his own. Its value comes from the persevering prayer, the pilgrimage recognized by the local Church and the fidelity of a community that repeatedly rebuilt its sanctuary.
Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes of Jianshan
Mary Immaculate, Lady of Lourdes, receives the prayer of those who go up to Jianthan. Join us on the way to the cross, strengthen the sick and comfort the families who pass through the test. Keep the community of Huzhuang and the Church of Jinan; make us perseverant in faith, humble in service and firm in hope of the Resurrection. Amen.
