In Tangzhen, within the current district of Pudong of Shanghai, a large New Gothic church is erected dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. From Lourdes to the Pudong plain

The advocation recalls the apparitions of the Virgin to Saint Bernardite Soubirous in Lourdes, France, in 1858. A few decades later, that spirituality of prayer, penance and maternal trust came to Tangmuqiao. The Pudong temple took forms inspired by the great European shrines, but it became home to a specific Chinese community.

Father Gouraud's project

Chinese Catholic Sources Link Construction to French Jesuit Jean-Marie Gouraud, known locally as E-lao or Runmin. After receiving a family heritage for the Church, he promoted a great temple dedicated to the Virgin of Lourdes. The first stone was placed on 24 April 1895 and the solemn opening was held 2 January 1897. Some repertories point to 1898 as the final date of the set, which can respond to the completion of later phases.

The church was drawn in the form of a Latin cross, with a dominant tower and large ships. The historical chronicles describe it as one of the largest Catholic churches around Shanghai, able to receive many faithful from the villages of Pudong.

One of the great sanctuaries of Shanghai

Tangmuqiao was recognized as a pilgrimage place of the diocese of Shanghai. The Catholic guides include him, together with Sheshan, Fu Jia and Jinjiaxiang, among the four great historical Marian enclaves of the diocese. In May, parishes and communities came to celebrate the Eucharist, to confess, to pray the rosary and to honor the Virgin.

The designation of the temple as a Jubilee church for the Holy Year of 2025 confirms that it is not just an architectural heritage: it remains integrated into the pastoral and penitential life of the local Church.

Interruption and recovery

Religious activity was interrupted during the political campaigns of the 20th century and the building was occupied for other uses. It was returned to the diocese in 1989. After a restoration, it reopened in 1992, recovering its liturgical function and the memory of the Marian pilgrimages.

The continuity of the sanctuary reflects a reality present in many Catholic communities in China: buildings could be temporarily lost, but devotion remained in families and was reexpressed publicly when possible.

Architecture and symbol

The large tower, the pointed arches and the cruciform plant place the building within the neo-Gothic missionary of the late 19th century. Its size responds to the expectation of hosting pilgrims, not just the parish population. The invocation of Lourdes also brings a spirituality linked to the sick, conversion and hope.

Verified location

The sanctuary is located in Tangzhen, Pudong, near Tanglu Road and Tangzhen Metro Station. The position of the building verified in open mapping is 31.21192, 121.65294. The ecclesial directory offers a virtually coincident location code, which allows the marker to be set safely.

Not confused: Tangmuqiao is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes and is located in Pudong. Sheshan, west of Shanghai, is dedicated to Mary Helper of Christians. They are two Marian shrines different from the same diocese.

A devotion to the sick and pilgrims

The Virgin of Lourdes leads to the Gospel through the simplicity of Bernardite. In Tangmuqiao, his presence invites him to pray for those suffering from disease, solitude or persecution, and to recognize that grace can take root in cultures far away from the place where devotion was born.

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes of Tangmuqiao

Mary Immaculate, Lady of Lourdes, welcomes those who come to Tangmuqiao with their diseases, fears and hopes. Hold on to the families of Pudong, strengthen the Church of Shanghai and teach us to hear your Son's call to conversion. May the rosary keep us united to Christ and attentive to those who suffer. Our Lady of Lourdes of Tangmuqiao, pray for us. Amen.
