A faith preserved in a cave

Local memory places the origin of the community during a phase of prohibition of Christianity. A Catholic family expelled from the nearby village of Xialu settled in Hanluoyan, excavated their home on the land and maintained faith there. With the growth of their descendants, a large cave was adapted as a chapel and Chinese priests began to attend regularly to the faithful.

This story harmonizes with the landscape: Hanluoyan is intertwined between the ravines and the banks of the Loes plateau, where the excavated houses have been a traditional response to the terrain and the climate. The first chapel was not a monumental gesture, but a house of prayer born within daily life.

The historic church of 1894

A study by Taiyuan University of Technology, based on field work and Hongdong County chronicle, date of 1894 the church built by the Dutch Franciscan priest that the sources transcribe as Fan. The temple, with a basic plant, could accommodate more than 400 people and became the historical church of the community.

Date note: a Catholic chronicle published in 2025 printed "1993" in describing the construction promoted by a Dutch bishop of the former vicariate of South Shanxi. This date does not fit the historical existence of the vicariate or the consideration of the building as an ancient church. The architectural study, which cites the local chronicle and documents the temple on the ground, establishes 1894. This is why 1894 is adopted and this is a clear record of the discrepancy.

The hill of the Seven Dolores

To the right of the church is the hill dedicated to Our Lady of the Seven Dolores. The pilgrims ascend by praying the stations of the path of the crucis; the journey lasts just over ten minutes and ends in the Marian chapel of height. From there is the parish set and the broken relief surrounding the village.

The advocation contemplates the sufferings that Mary lived together with Jesus: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight to Egypt, the loss of the Child, the encounter of Calvary, the crucifixion, the descent and the burial. In Hanluoyan this meditation is physically inscribed in the ascending: prayer, effort and landscape lead to the chapel.

Chinese Christian Reconstruction and Expression

After the recovery of public religious life, the Marian hill was rebuilt and established as a sanctuary of the diocese. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a large living room dedicated to the Virgin was added in the courtyard of the church, designed with Chinese classical architectural language.

The current arrangement unites three stages: the memory of the cave of the first believers, the church of the late 19th century and contemporary Marian constructions. The whole shows how a community can guard its history and at the same time express the Catholic faith through forms rooted in local culture.

Pilgrimage in May and September

Hanluoyan is a diocesan sanctuary, not just a parish church. A 2009 chronicle documents that Hongdong's faithful came in May and the 15 September, Our Lady of the Dolores' patron party. That year some groups walked for four hours, praying the Rosary and singing, before celebrating the Eucharist and climbing the crucis.

Another relationship about the Catholic shrines in China shows that, between 1 and 7 May 2002, the hill received thousands of pilgrims. Pastoral continuity came to the Jubilee of 2025: Hanluoyan was appointed a retired church of the diocese of Hongdong, and a contemporary chronicle points to the daily arrival of faithful to pray.

An advocation, a sanctuary and a community

The fountains use both the general name "Marian shrine of Hanluoyan" and the specific title of the hill and its chapel: "Our Lady of the Seven Dolores." Two separate places should not be confused. The painful hill, church and Marian hall are complementary parts of the same set of pilgrimage.

There is also no Marian apparition here. The importance of the place is born from the continuity of its community, from devotion to the Dolores of Mary and from its pastoral recognition by the diocese of Hongdong.

Verified location

The ecclesial and administrative sources place the sanctuary in Hanluoyan - also written Hanlueyan in some directories - within Quting, Hongdong County. The official gazetteer identifies the village with administrative code 141024102231, west of Xiayu.

OpenStreetMap places the core at 36.209105, 111.832088. The aerial photograph shows in its central north an exceptional scale enclosure for the village, with several ships, courtyard and monumental cover, connected with the immediate slope described by the shrine chronicle. The marker is set on the main building of the set, in 36.20927, 111.83247 (WGS-84). The location is verified on an enclosure scale; inside the hill, the individual position of each station of the road crucis is not publicly cartographed.

Spirituality of Hanluoyan

The Virgin of the Seven Dolores accompanies those who go through loss, disease, persecution or uncertainty. His pain is not despair: he remains with Christ and waits, even when he cannot change what happens externally.

Hanluoyan invites you to go through that fidelity step by step. The rising prayer recalls that suffering does not have the last word and that no human punishment remains outside the compassion of Mary or the resurrection of her Son.

Prayer to Our Lady of the Seven Dolores of Hanluoyan

Holy Mary, a painful Mother, you who stood by the cross of Jesus, accompanies those who carry today with pain, persecution or loneliness. Save the community of Hanluoyan and the diocese of Hongdong. Teach us to walk faithfully, to comfort those who suffer and to wait for the resurrection of your Son. Amen.
