A community born in the caves
Catholicism arrived in Zhaojialing in the early 19th century. The first faithful gathered to pray in houses excavated on earth, a traditional form of rural architecture on the Loes plateau. Soon after they raised a simple chapel dedicated to the Virgin.
The memory of that stage has not disappeared. Next to the modern sanctuary you can still see remains of the ancient church-cave and an old well that supplied people and animals. They are humble signs of a community that was born far from the great urban centres.
The Marian iglesia de 1872
En 1872 was dedicated the first formal church of Our Lady of Zhaojialing. The new construction attracted Catholics from nearby villages and turned the place into a pilgrimage destination. During the following decades the temple was extended to host an increasing community.
At the beginning of the 20th century the so-called Avenue of Our Lady, a ceremonial road that ordered the arrival of the pilgrims, was drawn. The church became one of the most well-known Marian shrines of the ancient diocese of Lu'an.
The tradition of graces received
The local tradition attributes to the intercession of Mary numerous graces: rain in times of drought, healing, birth of very desired children and protection of the population during the war. He also recalls that refugee neighbours in the church survived during the Japanese occupation.
A Catholic chronicle from Hong Kong reports that, in 1929Bishop Anton Theodor Spruit gathered testimonies about these graces and sent them to Rome. The same tradition states that Pius XI granted a prayer of his own that invokes "Our Lady of Zhaojialing."
Destruction and reconstruction
During the Cultural Revolution, the church suffered a grave destruction. The public life of the sanctuary was interrupted, but the families retained the devotion and memory of the pilgrimage.
En 1987after the recovery of religious activity, the community reconstructed the great church on the historical site. In the 1990s a new Marian temple was raised, the bell tower was raised and the interior was improved.
The Marian Temple and the Cross Way
A circular Roman-style temple was built to the west of the great church, especially for pilgrims. It is about 15 meters in diameter and is approximately 26 meters in height. Its silhouette and the great church of two towers today form the recognizable profile of the sanctuary.
To the east was opened a road of about 280 meters that surrounds the back slope. The fourteen stations are represented by stone reliefs. The journey unites devotion to Mary with the contemplation of the Passion of Christ.
The pilgrimage of May
Groups from the parishes of Changzhi and other regions of China arrive in Zhaojialing every May. The pilgrims walk through the crucis, pray to the Virgin and celebrate the Eucharist. Chronicles of the Diocese of Beijing describe this practice as a tradition shared by the many Catholic communities of Changzhi.
The continuity was confirmed again in 2025, when Zhaojialing was included among the Jubilee churches of pilgrimage of the diocese. A Catholic delegation from Xiangfan visited the temple in the same year in an official meeting with the Diocese of Changzhi.
A truly local advocation
The title does not come from an unchanged European title. The faithful call Mary by the name of her village: Our Lady of Zhaojialing. The link expresses a maternal relationship with a community and its concrete history.
Mary's image on the blue balloon that crowns the facade recalls that this local closeness does not lock the Virgin in one place. Mary is the mother of the universal Church and leads everyone to Jesus Christ, whose Sacred Heart also occupies a central place in the ornament of the temple.
Verified location and mapping
The sources agree to place the sanctuary at the highest point of Zhaojialing, about eight kilometres west of Xiangyuan. The national Catholic directory also places it in Xia Dian, Xiangyuan County.
A diocesan file reproduces the old reference "36 ° 50 ′ N, 113 ° E," too vague and moved tens of kilometres north. Contemporary mapping places the village around 36.51717, 112.96040. In the aerial photography, the great church, the circular temple and the pilgrimage compound are distinguished at its high north end.
The marker is therefore fixed in the center of the church, 36.51856, 112.96006 (WGS-84). The coincidence between village, distance, elevated position, architectural shape and distribution of the complex provides a much more reliable location than the rounded coordinate of the old file.
Spirituality of Our Lady of Zhaojialing
Zhaojialing teaches that faith can grow from small places. A meeting in a cave became a pilgrimage that has gone through two centuries. The well, the ruins, the road and the rebuilt temple speak of perseverance and gratitude.
Devotion invites us to present the needs before Mary without separating the prayer from the follow-up of Christ. The way of the Cross recalls that every grace leads to living with greater fidelity, hope and charity.
Prayer to Our Lady of Zhaojialing
Holy Mary, Our Lady of Zhaojialing, you who have accompanied this community from their humble caves, receive our needs and bring them to your Son. Hold those who suffer from disease, drought, violence or loneliness. Save the diocese of Changzhi, strengthen their families and make all grace received into service, reconciliation and peace. Amen.
