Chiquinquirá and the Boyacian peasants
Boyacá, Colombia
The peasants of Boyacá venerate Chiquinquirá as a protector of the land.
In the villages of Boyacá, the peasants take the Virgin of Chiquinquirá in procession through the fields before sowing. They ask him to bless the earth.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects the peasants from pests and droughts. The peasants bring him potato, corn and wheat offerings.
Every July 9, the peasants go up to Chiquinquí barefoot, carrying wild candles and flowers.
