Chiquinquirá and the Thousand Day War
Colombia
The Virgin was transferred to Bogotá to ask for peace during the civil war.
During the Thousand Day War (1899- 1902), the image of the Virgin was moved from Chiquinquirá to Bogotá to pray for peace. The Colombians on both sides came to venerate her.
Tradition tells that after the procession, the war ended. The soldiers left their weapons and went to pray to the basilica.
Today, every time Colombia faces difficulties, the bishops ask that the image be moved to Bogotá to pray for peace.
